When X-Server starts-up there comes a Gray-Screen on the top, Is there any way to change that Gray to any other cutomised screen. There is one option "-br" to blank out the gray screen, but this option gives a black screen, which is not desirable.

Is anyone else coming across these? Has anyone successfully managed to repair one?

Open Graphics Project releases OGD1 artwork

Submitted by Timothy Miller
on May 30, 2006 - 8:14am

At the end of February 2006, the Open Graphics Project team released schematics for their development board, OGD1. An article on KernelTrap was written about this, explaining the release under GPL and the nature of PCB schematics (logical connections between chips) and artwork (physical component placement and circuit trace routing). Just last Friday (2006-05-26), we announced the first draft of the artwork. For the most indepth information, check out the OGD1 page on the OGP Wiki, which links to PDFs for each of the routing layers and a way-cool composite image of all of the layers.

Which Graphiccard should be used to get the most GPL for the money

Hi there,

I'm looking for a graphiccard with AGP8x and support for 2 analog monitors. So I wondered which card I should take:

Nvidia - I used very often, but I want now to support hardware vendors which support OSS...

ATI - the same...

Matrox - I've heard that they put their Linux-drivers under GPL, but I heard too that this is only true for 2D, not 3D. Is there someone more familiar with that?

Hardware: Open Graphics Development Board Pricing

Submitted by Jeremy
on March 1, 2006 - 1:40pm

The Open Graphics Project was started in October of 2004 [story] by Timothy Miller [interview] with the intention of developing a completely open graphics card that "just works" on free and open source operating systems [story]. Since that time, the project has continued to work toward their goal [story], most recently completing the schematics [pdf] for their OGD1 board [story]. The OGD1 is an FPGA-based project board with memory and video hardware on it. The board will be utilized by the Open Graphics project to develop their graphics card, however it is also being made available commercially as a generic FPGA-based prototyping board to raise funds for the project. Timothy explains, "the OGD1 was going to be built anyway as a step towards OGC [the Open Graphics Card]. We were going to build 10 and use them ourselves. When corporate backing went away, we decided to make as many as we could sell."

At this time, no price has been set for the upcoming OGD1 board, however a recent discussion on the Open Graphics mailing list looked at the issue of determining an appropriate price. Timothy stressed that the OGD1 is not a graphics card, but instead is a prototyping board that is the first step toward creating a graphics card, "it's NOT a graphics card. It's a TOOL." He noted that similar boards on the market sell for upwards of $2,000, suggesting that the OGD1 will retail for quite a bit less, with discounts provided to people who buy the card in bulk and to active Open Graphics Project developers, "OGP developers are not customers. They are beneficiaries. :)" The pricing discussion continues, with the OGD1 expected to be completed and available for purchase within 6 months.

Hardware: Open Graphics Project's OGD1 PCB Schematic Completed

This week, developers with the Open Graphics Project are announcing that we have the PCB schematic for the OGD1 product ready for public review.

The Open Graphics Project is dedicated to developing open-architecture graphics hardware, specifically for use with Free and Open Source operating systems. Based on community feedback, we have defined a graphics architecture, and are working steadily towards producing real graphics hardware that "just works" with Linux, BSD, and other free operating systems.

Hardware: Open Graphics Project Status Update

Submitted by Timothy Miller
on October 3, 2005 - 5:17pm

It's been a while since the last update on the Open Graphics Project, so I've put together this article to fill in the community on what's been happening, what's going to happen, and how we can make what happens happen faster. Since the last update, a number of things have been going on, some more slowly than others. Although we're not too far off the Gantt chart, it is nevertheless frustrating for us to find the time to work on some things. For a hardware project that's being done in our spare time, though, things are going rather well, and there's a very strong likelihood that you'll see real hardware for sale on our web site before the year is out. Especially if we can get help on a few things from the community. Read on for details.
