Viewing/using the cache of old IDE hard drives...

Is there a way you could remove the control/interface board from a hard drive and be able to view the 256-512K of cache as a "drive", like you would use a RAMdisk? I have several old HD's (200-500Mbytes), I have no real use for anymore (and they're way too slow) ad figure this would be an interesting "hack" to be able to use their tiny cache as a "micro drive", of sorts.

I found this info ever several blogs regarding this problem. It is a really easy fix, with just a little bit of work and patience. I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4014. This should also work on a A100 since they are of the same family.
1) like always with anything that you do when taking your computer apart, take out the battery and unplug it (common sense)

Helo everybody.

Recently I've started to research about blktrace and blkparse to monitoring a server.
To start with my work I have developed a very simple program that creates a file on my home directory (/home/user), and in this file write a number of bytes given like parameter.

At the same time, in other console I use blktrace with blkparse to monitoring the HD.

Hello,

I'm just reading about these new WD drives (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=385). It appears they lower power consumption by reducing speed from 7200 to 5400 RPM. Has anybody tried them on linux? Any feedback?

Thx,

Erasmo.

Hi folks. i have a toshiba m30x-129. Battery seems to charge alright so i suppose power to the system is fine. My problem is when ever i switch the power on i only hear some activity for a few seconds. less then 3 5 and then every thing goes dead. Nothing comes on the screen. i have tried connecting to external monitor but that did help. Any one with experience in this ?
