Last week I interviewed for a part-time position that involved driver development for an embedded system. I'm not sure I'll get an offer as I have no real experience in this area. But ever since I took an operating systems course last year, I have been very interested in "getting my hands dirty". Maybe this failed job acquisistion will be incentive to start learning. I grabbed a copy of Linux Device Drivers (Rubini and Corbet), and I am starting to read.

This doc also has some fascinating reading and code examples.
As you Google around looking for ideas, example code etc.,
search for LKM as well as device driver (keywords).
