Linux: Measuring Scheduler Improvements

September 19, 2003 - 9:27am

Linux news

Mark Wong posted a series of benchmark results from Rusty Russell's Hackbench. Rusty describes Hackbench as a minimized 'chat benchmark' that doesn't use threads or semaphores. The benchmark launches groups of processes that each listen on a given socket, and complimentary groups of processes that write 100 messages to each of the listening sockets, measuring the time this takes. This process is repeated multiple times with an increasing number of groups of processes, therby measuring the scalability of the scheduler with an increasing number of processes.

Mark's results begin with the 2.5.28 development kernel and continue up through the current 2.6.0-test5 kernel. In a second email he also offers results of the -mm tree, beginning with 2.5.66-mm1 and continuing up through 2.6.0-test5-mm2. Andrew Morton [interview] glanced at the results and commented that they looked "great, but tragically incomprehensible", going on to ask for an explanation, "do we rock or do we suck?". Mark replied, "the general trend in the metric indicates everything has been improving, so I think we rock."

Subject: Hackbench STP Results History for 2.5/2.6
Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2003 17:07:54 -0700 (PDT)

Here is a history of results that we have for hackbench from STP over
the base 2.5 and 2.6 kernels. I have them separated by the number of
processors from 1-, 2-, 4- and 8-processor systems.

Kernels not listed either do not have results or the kernel was not
able to be used on STP.
The 'Metric' is the average time in seconds to do something with 100
processes.
Smaller numbers are better as well as a (-) change.
'Change' refers to a percentage change in the metric from the last
completed test with results.

Sorry, I was a bit hasty. Hackbench is a test from Rusty Russel that's intended to test the scalability of the scheduler. The results I gathered are from a test where 100 processes are started to send a message to another set of 100 processes. This is repeated at least a few times and the time taken to complete each instance is averaged. Anyone feel free to correct me as I learned this second hand. The general trend in the metric indicates everything has been improving, so I think we rock.

Each individual test run executes the test for 20 processes, then 40, then 60, 80, and finally 100 processes. Each set of processes are executed 5 times, and an average time to complete the exercise is given for each of the sets. The test report (shown by the link) has a graph of the averaged times for each of the sets. In all cases, there is a very good linear correlation as the number of processes increase. The results for the previous email showd only the times for the 100 process set. As you look again and compare the times against the 1-way, 2-way, 4-way and 8-way systems, you see the times decrease as the number of processors in a system increase. This is also a good trend. And it seems to be a fairly good linear correlation as well, implying that the scheduler has done a good job at scaling between processes within one system increase, and a good job at scaling as the number of processors increase. As stated in the reply above, as the kernel is evolving, continual improvements are being made to the scheduler, as shown by the decrease in average times for the run of 100 set of processes with each subsequent release of the kernel. > > The general trend in the metric indicates everything has been improving, so I > think we rock. -- Craig Thomas [email blocked]

It hos not seem to me that there has been a great deal of improvement, if anything things are a little worse compared with the best results from 2.5.65-mm3 for a single processor, and the sacling with more CPU is way off.

If we use the results from the 2.6.0 - test5 kernel, and define that 1 cpu is at 100% effectiveness, the cpu scaling looks to me as follows. Am i way off base on this?

Effectiveness = 100*time-for-1-cpu/(time-of-n-cpu * num-of-cpu)

              Time(sec) Effectiveness
CPU -1 15.3 100.0%
CPU -2 11.8 64.8%
CPU -4 8.4 45.5%
