Try Feisty Fawn Beta 7.04
This has the latest hardware support in Linux Kernel 2.6.20 (written by Linus Torvalds and his friends at kernel.org) -- it has a better chance of supporting your device than an earlier version. They generally fix a lot more bugs in new versions than they create.
If your device still doesn't work, keep trying newer kernel.org versions as they are released. I have a few machines that were useless for Linux at purchase but work well now after 6 months of kernel updates.
Same error with USB2IDE in SuSe 10.2
Same error here with a cherapo USB 2 IDE afdaptor, running on Linux kernit 2.6.18.2-34-default #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

try upgrading the kernel
Try upgrading the kernel (or the whole distro).
There were numerous fixes to date.
What also gives (or gave) me problems with USB mass-storage devices is... udev.
