With the release of the 2.6.19-rc1-mm1 kernel, the ext4 filesystem [story] was merged into Andrew Morton [interview]'s -mm tree for further testing. In the announcement Andrew notes that the new filesystem is compatible with ext3 until you add a file that has extents. He also notes, "when comparing performance with other filesystems, remember that ext3/4 by default offers higher data integrity guarantees than most. So when comparing with a metadata-only journalling filesystem, use `mount -o data=writeback'. (Although this doesn't seem to make much difference with ext3)" The goal is to stabilize the new filesystem within the next six to nine months, and ultimately to replace the ext3 filesystem.
From: Andrew Morton [email blocked] To: linux-kernel Subject: 2.6.19-rc1-mm1 Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2006 00:09:28 -0700 ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.19-rc1/2.6.19-rc1-mm1/ - Added the ext4 filesystem. Quick usage instructions: - Grab updated e2fsprogs from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tytso/e2fsprogs-interim/ - It's still mke2fs -j /dev/hda1 - mount /dev/hda1 /wherever -t ext4dev - To enable extents, mount /dev/hda1 /wherever -t ext4dev -o extents - The filesystem is compatible with the ext3 driver until you add a file which has extents (ie: `mount -o extents', then create a file). - When comparing performance with other filesystems, remember that ext3/4 by default offers higher data integrity guarantees than most. So when comparing with a metadata-only journalling filesystem, use `mount -o data=writeback'. (Although this doesn't seem to make much difference with ext3). And you might as well use `mount -o nobh' too. Making the journal larger than the mke2fs default often helps performance with metadata-intensive workloads. - Added the high-resolution timers and dynamic-ticks code. Please be sure to cc [email blocked], mingo@elte.hu and johnstul@us.ibm.com if it blows up. Boilerplate: - See the `hot-fixes' directory for any important updates to this patchset. - To fetch an -mm tree using git, use (for example) git fetch git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/smurf/linux-trees.git v2.6.16-rc2-mm1 - -mm kernel commit activity can be reviewed by subscribing to the mm-commits mailing list. echo "subscribe mm-commits" | mail [email blocked] - If you hit a bug in -mm and it is not obvious which patch caused it, it is most valuable if you can perform a bisection search to identify which patch introduced the bug. Instructions for this process are at http://www.zip.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/stuff/bisecting-mm-trees.txt But beware that this process takes some time (around ten rebuilds and reboots), so consider reporting the bug first and if we cannot immediately identify the faulty patch, then perform the bisection search. - When reporting bugs, please try to Cc: the relevant maintainer and mailing list on any email. - When reporting bugs in this kernel via email, please also rewrite the email Subject: in some manner to reflect the nature of the bug. Some developers filter by Subject: when looking for messages to read. - Semi-daily snapshots of the -mm lineup are uploaded to ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/mm/ and are announced on the mm-commits list. I've also created a slightly new structure in: ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tytso/e2fsprogs-interim Each new version will be its own directory, i.e., e2fsprogs-1.39-tyt1, with a symlink LATEST pointing at the most recent directory. Within each directory, there will be a tarball of the complete sources, as requested by akpm, as well a broken-out tar.gz file and a single file that has all of the patches rolled up. I've regenerated the rollup patches this time with feeling (and the -N diff option :-), so once the new structure gets mirrored out from master.kernel.org to ftp.kernel.org, you should be able to get the fixed rollup patch, as well as a pre-patched tarball. I don't know why that would cause fsx to get a sigsegv though.
Data integrity ...
I really hope atleast some of the work done on ixt3 (http://www.cs.wisc.edu/adsl/Publications/iron-sosp05.pdf) will end in ext4. Also, this paper shows that ext3 is not all that good when it comes to error handling and data integrity ...
If you do hope that, then e-m

I suspect that's because the Iron Filesystem guys have a solution in search of a problem. I don't buy their claims of all these mysterious and complex ways in which drives commonly fail.
Years of reliance on ext3 have demonstrated to me that ext3 does indeed do quite well WRT data integrity.

Well, if you're thinking in the context of your home pc or an average server, then I agree with you.
However, think about various digital archives. From online picture albums on, there are many cases where one would want to preserve his data for 30 years or so and have them immediately available (so, no tapes). In such cases things start getting interesting and "standard" filesystems may not be good enough.
So it seems ZFS is the way to go for us ...
However, think about various
Beings an average hard drive has an average life of about two years, I would find some other form of media and not be to worried about the file system. Hard rives fail that's why there's still money to be made in tapes. Tapes can have an average of about 30 years (LT03) some even say they can last as long as 80. There's no immediate access now media that offers that type of life. The best thing to do is continue to use hard drives but do backups with BRU or something, you shoyuld of course do this with any file system.
yeah, right...
Average two years? I suggest you get real with your estimates or stop abusing your drives.
