Same problem with Intel 965 Express chipset as was posted on August 22, 2006

I'm trying to build a new computer system to get up and running for a engineering friend using Suse Linux 10.0. Heres the specs:

Intel DG965OT mATX motherboard for SFF case(uses the Intel 965 Express chipset)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 (2.66Ghz per core)
4GB DDR2 1.8v Corsair ram at 667Mhz
320GB WD w/o NCQ SATA drive
Sony DVD-RW+/-

When trying to install Suse Linux 10.0. The BIOS sees the internal DVD, so I can boot off of it. But when I get to the Suse Linux 10.0 installation screen, I pick "Safe Installation"... it starts to load, goes to the next screen and it tells me there is no DVD/CD media in drive. If go to DVD/CDROM verification option and click on it, it says I have no drive installed. So I can definitely verify that the 965 chipset has some compatibility issues. My problem is I'm not a Linux guru and would like to find some answers so I don't have to eat this motherboard and go to a Intel older 945 chipset or something?

I had this issue on Fedora Core 5 on a 965 chipset and had to add the "all-generic-ide" to the boot parameters.

I'm not sure how you do this in Suse Linux though.

Cheers,
Richard.

Fedora Core 5 on a 965 chipset

I used the following boot parameters on a DG965OT intel motherboard with core duo 2 6400 chip and ide dvd drive (SATA hard drives):

linux irqprobe all-generic-ide acpi=off

Which worked quite well. The irqprobe parameter was not strictly necessary, but the system stopped looking for devices at IRQ11, and the install much faster/smoother with that parameter.

I was also advised to turn off automatic fan detection in the bios, for install purposes at least.

Good luck.

I've got the same problem on the same hardware but with SUSE 10.1. However, irqprobe all-generic-ide acpi=off unfortunately didn't help :-( Since I'm also a 'normal' Linux user, I really don't know what to do.

...on most Linux´es I have tried. Open Suse 10.2, Simply Mepis 6.0.4, Ubuntu 6.10, Freespire...
Hope they do something about it. The 965 chipset + Dual Core 2 is becoming a very "normal" hardware config.

Sorry. Have to answer

Sorry. Have to answer myself, I found out why it doesn´t work. New releases of some Linux distros have kernel .18 and later, and they have support for the 965 chipset.

Ubuntu Edgy will natively support that JMicron IDE controller. The Ubuntu Edgy Beta CD already does -- you can try that out first.

Before Installing load these ide drivers... jmicron sata driver and the generic ide driver. Both of these iptions I know for sure are available in SuSe 10.2.
