hi,
i want to find the intrfaces connected to the device and the status of the interfaces i.e wether they are Uo or down.i have one idea of using ping to aparticular interface Ip.if ping success then we say that interface is UP.if ping fails interface is down.if any body have any other solution please inform me.

you cannot trust ping always.
you cannot trust ping always.
the other host may be blocking pings, for example.
use 'mii-tool' command and parse its output.
try /sbin/ifconfig and grab
