KernelTrap: Banner Contest, Cast Your Vote

Submitted by Jeremy

There have been a number of banners submitted in our recent contest [story], though no themes. You can view all submissions and vote on them here, so please take a look and cast your vote (registered users can vote up to five times, whereas anonymous users are only able to vote once).

If you have a banner that you forgot to submit, go ahead and send it now.

A final selection will be made toward the end of the month. Whether or not we change to a new default banner/logo will depend on the feedback I get, so leave your comments...

Can't vote

What happens? it tells me that "I have already used up all my votes". I haven't had the chance to vote! I tried two different adresses/pc's, and still can't vote.

This doesn't seem to be a democracy. Some can and some others can't vote :-(

That message means that someone else already voted from the same IP address. This is to prevent people from easily loading the ballet box (though I'm sure it's possible with a little ingenuity).

This means that if you're sharing a computer with someone else (or one of several computers all hitting the internet as the same IP address), only one of you gets to vote. There's little I can do about that.

You are right though, that this is not a democracy. The votes are merely advisory... In any case, feel free to drop a comment about what banner(s) you like, and why - that will have more influence anyway.

Hi, another person that is blocked (I think my large sections of my college share an IP or at least gives out publci ones only upon demand so lots of chance of reuse)

Ive always been a fan of the original and was sorta disapointed with the fact that there was a contest since I did not want to see it change. I did find the commented code one looks like a possible replacement but the shadow and test are too close in color so does not stand out as much. I woudl say drop teh shadow (my preference since I perfer the simple) or create more contrast.

Thanbsk for the good site

It's just plain not working. I have an entire block of IPs and I can't vote anonymously from any of them, and I think I can rule out voting already and recently acquiring amnesia.

amazing!

apparently someone snuck into my locked building on the weekend, unlocked my workstation, voted, locked it back up, and snuck out past security..

apparently my IP had used all its votes.. :) amazing.

Sure enough...

Looks like my super-simple logic was too simple. Indeed, all anonymous users were being blocked. That is now fixed.

Please try again.

Letting users vote the old logo and some new stuff is: L-A-M-E. People always choose: the keep-it-the-way-it-is-option, even if there's better && new stuff... "Oh I know this! Lets vote for it".

The old logo looks ugly there are far better ones available. If you keep the voting the way it is I guarantee that the new logo will be the old logo. And this stinks!

It's just the best

With all my respect: if one wants to change the logo, it must be because there's a better one around. And quite honestly... all those "new" ones, except for one (which I won't mention for a fair voting) look like crap.

There's one thing I like from the old one though: it reflects the coding work. The new one looks ok, but it doesn't, and the rest are crap.

If people see something better they plead for it, they don't run away.

Last Banner

I like the way the text is set in the last banner, but the logo thing is kinda wacky, and doesn't seem to be anything at all.

Being the last banners creator im slightly biased :) but the idea is this: 'Trap' is written in grey - the outer ring is grey and therefore the trap around the kernel which is the red circle. (I think BeOS had a sphereish icon for its kernel - Hey! I have to make it a sphere instead of a plain filled circle! :)).

The kernel tries to 'escape' the trap, ie the rays out from the red circle.
Yeah I know its a long shot but hey its only an idea :)

numbering the logos

Jeremy,

It would simplify the commenting of the logos if they were numbered. Now they have to be described.

The banner which is currently in the "lead" (008.png) looks way too much like a certain unnamed OSDN site's logo.

My personal favourite for KT and the one I voted for is the one with the box (003.png), but I also like the red/grey/black one without the actual web (017.png). The old logo has its charms too.

Excellent idea. Numbers have been added.

Similarities

Logo numbers 17, 19 and 20 are _very_ similar. If you combine their votes they are easily in the lead.

What I I'm saying is that would it not be better to only show one of these at this stage and then offer the variations later to avoid splitting the vote and getting a non representative result?

(Yes... I did vote for one of them.) :o)

Thanks.
