I upgraded kernel to 2.6.15 and after re-compiling nvidia proprietary kernel module (version 1.0.6629-r5 - gentoo), X.org gave me following error:

X Window System Version 6.8.2

I couldn't make it run, so i downgraded to 2.6.14 and everything was back to normal. Any ideas what has changed in kernel causing such error?

The nVidia driver you use is quite old.

Version Release Date
 1.0-6629 November 5, 2004
 1.0-8178 December 22, 2005

While this might not be the cause of the problem, you should
upgrade anyway in case the good guys at nVidia fixed any bugs
(one of which could be causing your problem).

Same problem here, but I changed xorg.conf to use xorg's nv driver instead of dropping back to 2.6.14. Works fine.

The current stable nVidia driver for Gentoo is 6629-r5. There is an entry in Gentoo's bug tracker for this issue:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120103

nvidia 1.0-8187 requires a patch for 2.6.15

See Zander's nvidia driver 1.0-8187 patch thread here on the nvidia forums: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021

It would seem that 1.0-8187 has some issues with linux 2.6.15 without his rolled up patch (available on that thread).

With my 7800 GTX, and gentoo-sources 2.6.16-gentoo-r1, things are stable here using media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.8187-r2 yet with the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8178-U011806.diff patch from that thread.

This is on an MSI Neo4-F with an AMD64 3800 (venice) CPU.
