That is a diagnostic feature. You can type any two numbers. The first number tell how many paragraphs there will be and the second tells how many repetitions of the sentence "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" there will be in each
paragraph.

This was made for the developers to easily check through all of the fonts for bugs. "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" contains every letter of the English alphabet.

"The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" does not contain all the letters in the English alphabet, there is no 'S' in the phrase/sentence as you wrote it,but indeed the actual phrase has 'jumps' as opposed to jumped as you put it.

Freecell Easter Egg

December 7, 2006 - 8:22am

The Freecell easter egg still exists in my copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2 but the Winmine egg is now gone. On the plus side, the winmine egg isn't really needed because if you minimize winmine, the clock stops anyways.

For those who don't know it, run Freecell and during your game, press control-shift-F10. You will get a box called "User-Friendly User Interface" The text states what to do. If you click Abort then doubleclick any card, the game is over and you win.

How to get a movie playing on your desktop

This is just a fun trick I found one time trying to take a screen shot of a movie.

Insert a DVD and play it.
On a Laptop, hold the "Fn" key and press the "Prnt Scrn" key.
Now open Ms Paint and press Ctrl+V, you will now notice the movie is playing inside the picture editor!
Now save the picture and set it as your desktop background!
Enjoy the movie on your desktop!

Note- When you stop the movie in the player, or eject the DVD, the background will turn black.

thats because windows use a determined color for the video overlay. IE winamp has already a desktop overlay to show the AVS on it, just open AVS configuration and set the overlay function on.

The explicatin is that windows ocupes a plain color (a purple closer to black) to replace it with the video. If you reproduce a video on WinMedia player and put paint at front with taht color (you can get this color simply pressing prtscr and paste the image) you will see the video.

You guys are idiots there

You guys are idiots there are pages of information on the www about easter eggs in windows XP. I have listed the best below. Most of the easter eggs are in fact in the xp applications supplied with the operating system.

1.
Right click on the desktop and click on Properties. On the Screensaver tab, select the 3D Text screensaver and open its properties. In the text box, type "volcano".

2.
There is a file called "quotes" which has quotes from the windows software programmers.

3.
Open IE 5.5 Click on Help > About. Hold down Ctrl + Shift + Alt and click on acknowledgements.

4.
4.1. In solitaire, take advantage of another egg, press alt + shift + 2 to show the ending, or win to see the ending if you prefer.
4.2. Move the cursor, the falling cards speed up. If you get the right timing you can make a matrix card effect.

5. [This one is the only operating system i.e non-application XP egg that I know about]
Go to "c:\windows\" directory. There are two easter eggs here. One is an animation file conviniently "forgotten" by the programmers. It is called clock.avi and can be opened in windows media player! There is also a file called "0". This is a file created specially by the programmers and bypasses windows functions because if you look the size of the file is actually ZERO!

Enjoy people!

:)

Thanks for the volcano trick. AWESOME.

I saw the clock and the 0.log. Scary! There is another trick that bypasses the operating system - you cannot create a file called "cons" if you try it will not appear. Its frightneing to think that Micsrosoft has all these backdoors in their operating system. If they can do this then they could do anything without your knowledge. At work we have Mac computers this stuff with the "cons" and "0.log" just proves that microsoft can not be trusted!

Microsoft wrote the software, and it is closed source. It can do anything they want it to do (even if the action is dormant waiting for a trigger like a webpage that has an element with a certain id tag), and you really can't figure it out unless they were sloppy or you are lucky or Sherlock Holmes :) . This is a fact of running a closed source operating system.

For example, Internet Explorer or any other part of the OS can theoretically send any garbage out past external firewalls as long as a single port is open (eg, port 80.. and I am talking about using Cisco or Linux etc to block.. if you use Windows firewall than you are back to square one). Binary data, whether a jpeg or something else, looks basically like any other binary data if you don't know the secret hand shake.

Were those all your passwords and user names that just blipped out onto the net? What was inside the encrypted packet.. or was it even encrypted?

And that blip on the hard drive, was that some data that just got modified (corrupted) or deleted? How will I know? How will I know it can't happen tomorrow?

And to make things worse, through online updates (even those you think you are blocking), any behavior can be added tomorrow and erased the following day (erasing the evidence in the process).

Do you think Windows has so much malware for no reason? There are a bunch of "holes." "Malware" writers can exploit them as can anyone that knows the "holes" are there.

Am I just saying FUD? Does it matter? I can't know, and neither can you. And yes they can do whatever they want basically if you run their software and hook up online.

Certainly their EULA seems to attempt to give them free reign legally.

The main reason I don't touch Windows any more and run Linux is not because of robustness or speed or free apps or anything like that. It's generally because of the transparency of Linux and also the hackability (I like to be an active participant).

BTW, there are many ways to have your identity abused and to be watched or set up, etc. But at least make it difficult for the crooks. Heck a rogue MS programmer can make a bundle by adding a little bit of code here and there and then dealing (or having prior dealt) with much worse characters than Bill Gates or anyone closely associated with Microsoft.

If Sony could sneak a rootkit in, how much easier would it be for Microsoft to sneak a whole lot more quietly.

1. Create a file in C:\ called "msft.oxx" (no quotes)

2. Open it with notepad.

3. Type in: "MS%i* MsFT x%$" (No quotes and must have CAPITALS for where i typed in capitals and lower case for where i typed in lower case) Save and close.

4. Go to Start>Run and type in "cmd" (no quotes)

5. type in: "CD C:\" (no quotes)

6. type in: "MSR msft.oxx" (no quotes)

7. It will say "'MSR' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file." Don't worry this is normal.

8. Delete the file "NTLDR" (no quotes) in C:\ . You might have to go to Tools>Folder Options>View> and un-tick "Hide protected operating system files (Reccomended)" to see it.

9. Restart the computer and look at the "msft.oxx" (no quotes) file!!!

If anyone has listened to this idiot, here's how to fix it:
1. Boot on to your windows cd.
2. Load recovery console.
3. Type BootRec.exe /fixmbr (may be different depending on windows version)
4. Reboot Windows, removing cd before bios loads it.
5. DON'T LISTEN TO ANY MORE STUPID ADVICE!

Easter egg.. I've only tested this on XP and Vista (Does NOT work on Vista)

1. Right click your desktop, and create a new text file.
2. Name it what ever you want.
3. Open it.
4. Write "Bush hid the facts", EXACTLY like that WITHOUT the quotes.
5. Save the file, close it.
6. Now open it again...

Enjoy ;)

PS: Does not work if you just open an existing document and write the text. You MUST create a completely new document on the desktop.

Hate to break it to you, but there are no easter eggs in Windows XP.

Shortcuts

on
August 20, 2008 - 1:26am

Windows XP do not allows shortcuts to shortcuts, but we can override this protection by little hacking.

The procedure is complicated, so i've created two shortcuts on my own. They are in a ZIP file and you have to extract the entire content to the "C:\" directory or this will not work (you will not see the strange behavior). The ZIP file also contains a batch file to delete the extracted shortcuts (because you will not be able to delete them easily with Windows Explorer) and there is also a Readme.txt file. READ IT before extracting the other files.

Here is the link : http://rapidshare.com/files/138680118/TEST_SC.ZIP.html
