This entire post should be beaten up with a sh1tty stick, lit on fire, soaked in HNO3, and stored away in a adamantium safety box. Then have the safety box placed in a boat, take the boat to the middle of the Atlantic ocean and have some militar aircrafts nuke the boat into oblivion.

Sad. Utterly sad.

Device names such as COM1, CON or LPT1 are reserved words, ... Users cannot create files and folders whose names are reserved words like DOS device names. ..

I have seen the issue where OS X users made folders called con connected to a Windows 2003 server using SMB. I would imagine Linux lets you do the same as well since its a different file system.....only using Windows I would imagine will not let you create the files within a windows share.

But who is to blame for the files being able to be created? Is it an OS X bug or Windows bug?

Later,

I would say both... Windows is supposed to deny make the folder, and OSX/Linux is supposed to make a local error before transmitting the request, so that the user get a proper error instead of an error code from the Windows machine.

On the other hand, maybe the client systems isn't supposed to care about it, as disallowed names might change in the future... Then they should recognise the Windows error code (That Windows WERE SUPPOSED to make), and translate into a proper error message ("File/Folder name not allowed" or something).

bcuz CON in DOS stands for blank spaces i.e., like ' '
so we cant name a folder as blank spaces that is only the reason that we cant name con in a folder...

CON Folder -- PRN EITHER!

EdwinF (not verified)
on
January 2, 2007 - 7:05am

well, you cannot create a PRN folder, file either!
That sh*t is because Windows keeps backward compatibility with MS-DOS,
in which CON, PRN and who knows what others "reserved names" are related to devices.... and btw, it doesn't work for files.... try con.txt,con.htm, con.etc .... it doesn't work.... try it with prn, Prn, PRn, windows is case insensitive

Here is the solution:-

Gagan Grover

These are special file names used to designate common device names such as
COM1, COM2, printer port etc etc….

Following is about file naming you would like to read about

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa365247.aspx

I believe there is actually a round-about way in which you can create
these files also. I don’t remember on the top of my head but I’ll try
to search and get back to you.

there are two ways to open 'DOS' window

hi ,
well, i still have 2 years to graduate in the software engineering program and i read the comment u wrote regarding the creation of this folder "con"
It`s not a surprise that this is happening, in fact, windows has hidden and inaccessible folders of different names ( of which one is called "con")
and thus, users are unable to name a folder by "con" since windows already used the name.

for more info here`s my mail : julien_b4@hotmail.com

Can you create a folder named "con" in windows?? Also try to create a folder named "nul" you won't be able to. If you are not tired, also try creating folder named “prn“. I hope you could create, oh you could not??? Yes, there is a reason.

This is because “nul”, “prn” and “con” are “special” files in Windows System that are used in maintaining the internal directory structure in the FAT (File Allocation Table).

Dear Kerneltrap reader, viewer, surffer

these words are -- CON, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3,COM1 to COM9 and LPT1 to LPT9.... in build word for the ms-dos prompt functions, please study ms-dos 3 to 5 version you will know why these are not created directly.

The CON is mainly used for the file creations of several types of application....

that is u can create text file, word document files, power point presentation, or any files types you want to create..

1---> example: notepad txt

at dos prompt level

type

c:\ copy con sample.txt----- then press enter and add any text
hello world
hello world
then press ctrl+z to save these file
the sample.txt is created and can be opened via notepad

2---> example: word document doc

at dos prompt level

type

c:\ copy con sample.doc----- then press enter and add any text
hello world
hello world
then press ctrl+z to save these file
the sample.doc is created and can be opened via word document

3---> example:

at dos prompt level

type

c:\ copy con sample.ppt----- then press enter and add any text
hello world
hello world
then press ctrl+z to save these file
the sample.ppt is created and can be opened via power point presentation

and other word like LPT, LPT1... these are port for printer usage
and COM is used for Internet or Intranet usage

The same is with 'aux'.
On older Windowses, Windows stored console data in C:\con and something similar in C:\aux. But the problem was, that there were some kind of multiple folders named the same way (they all where totally invisible), so typing C:\con or C:\aux caused an error, but typing C:\con\con or C:\aux\aux caused a bluescreen. Microsoft fixed this, but in the earlier Windowses it might still be there. So if you want to prank someonee, do one of these:
1)put any of those adresses in a batch file and add it to autostart.
2)set one of them as IE homepage
