The master.kernel.org server was recently moved to a new home at Oregon State University's Open Source Lab [1], the same that provides hosting for KernelTrap [story [2]]. The master server is where Linus Torvalds and other Linux kernel developers upload files, from where the data is pushed to the main download servers, zeus1 and zues2 [story [3]]. Peter Anvin explained, "this should give much better bandwidth and a more reliable backup solution, in addition to access to a real, staffed NOC."
One of three Linux Kernel Archives maintainers [story [4]], Kees Cook, talks about his trip to Oregon to help with the server move in his blog [5], "the master server's new home is just above a stack of Mozilla servers at the OSL's facilities. Great place. Nice people. Lots of bandwidth." Associate Director of the OSL, Scott Kveton, noted that OSL has been talking to kernel.org admins for about a year offering to help, and includes more information [6] in his blog, as well as some pictures of the move [7].

This should give much better bandwidth and a more reliable backup solution, in addition to access to a real, staffed NOC. Special thanks to Javier Henderson for volunteering to fly the machine up there by private airplane, thus minimizing downtime. It is expected to be back online around 12:00 PDT/19:00 UTC tomorrow, Saturday, September 20. The new IP address of the machine will be 140.211.167.34. -hpa
