People have helped created a complete OS just not the kernel. The momentum behind this so huge that Linus's effort to trademarking it useless as people do make concious choice related with Opensource. So am I. I buy SuSE OS not linux kernel and I care less about what the kernel is, linux or hurd. But I do appreciate his effort and so many others, like people with GCC/GNU, Apache, GNOME, KDE .. the list will be too long to be inlcuded with OS name/brand.

The article was well written. I would like to add one suggestion for branding any OS, please do not use Linux or any thing with it because of not only trademark and cost but it may offend others like GNU or any software that is included with the OS. Such As

Brand: OpenSuSE GNU/OS
Includes: Linux Kernel 2.6.13
X.org e.t.c ....

So I humbly suggest please change your name rather than paying to maddog/LMI. Send a message that community is much bigger than the trade mark.

Sincerely

Syed Mamun Raihan

Why ppl are so naive. Cant they see charging 200 USD for any organization is extortion . and also how pathetic it is to claim every thing inside SuSE or Mandriva or Fedora is LMI contribution. Making money for spending money for future litigation is so absurd. If OSDL do not care about Linux trademark then we should not care too. If OSDL cares then I must say that they are well funded to protect Linux trademark. And can generated more fund from corporate sponsorship .. this is Just maddog's scam/extortion ..

Why not OSDL

Why OSDL is not sposoring Linux Trademark? If they can house Linus Torvalds and A. Morton, why not the trademark itself? Also under what logic organization with 0$ revenue are being asked for 200$? Is there any community participation for such decissions .. Are LMI begging for money? :) Pathetic ...
By the way Linux is Registered TradeMark of Linus Torvalds ..
