Problem with X-Windows/Slackware

When I start up X all I see is a really screwed up black screen with red bots at the top (as if everything was squished up there)...

Somewhat new to Linux (at least the configuring X side of it), so not exactly sure what to do. Using the default Xorg .conf file I get these error messages:

(WW) VESA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0x42000000, 0x2000000)
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
xset: bad font path element (#58), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax
startkde: Starting up...
Pixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
Pixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
Pixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
Pixmap: Cannot create a QPixmap when no GUI is being used
kbuildsycoca running...
KWrited - Listening on Device /dev/pts/0

The first line I checked against /proc/mtrr and I couldn't add a new line to allow write-combining.

I also tried xorgconfig to create my own conf file, but it gives me the same errors.

I have read other threads and google searches have shown that many people upgraded to the 2.6.x kernel and had no problems anymore, but I do not know if I can do that (this machine is not connected to a network), or if I have enough experience to get the updated kernel into my system without screwing something up.

Any help is appreciated!

I have the same error from xset, i have ONLY this err.

in the xorg.conf COMMENT the line which points to the CID fonts, cause this dir is empty.

I will test that package -> x11-fonts-misc-6.8.2-noarch-1

I am with Slackware 10.2 and KDE 3.4.2

Delete CID part in /etc/X11/fs/config. Maybe it will help!
