2.4 stable kernel maintainer Marcelo Tosatti [interview] released 2.4.31-pre1 noting, "it contains a very small number of changes, mostly an x86_64 update." The 2.4 kernel went into maintenance mode following the release of 2.4.28-pre4 last October [story], currently receiving mainly bug and security fixes as announced back in December of 2003 [story].

With this release, Marcelo also noted, "I'm planning on moving the v2.4 repository along with the full history information to a git repository soon." Linus began writing "git" on April 7'th [story], a rapidly evolving userland filesystem upon which various SCM implementations are being built or adapted. The 2.6 kernel source is already managed in a git repository, with the first succesful git release being 2.6.12-rc3 on April 20'th [story].
