Fedora Core 4 Test 2 under VMware Workstation 5.0

I toyed around a bit with Fedora Core 4 Test 1. I didn't get too much time with it, because soon after I finally got the ISOs downloaded, FC4T2 was released.

There was one glaring problem with FC4T1. After installing in a freshly-created VM, the first boot to the GUI desktop hung. After a few minutes I lost patience and switched to a console. There, "top" showed that "gdm" and "syslogd" were competing to see who could consume the most CPU time. A quick "yum update gdm" retrieved an update, and one reboot later the system was happy.

Last night, I created a fresh new VM and installed FC4T2. My (new) host system is:

  • Toshiba Satellite A75-S231 (3.3GHz HT P4)
  • 1.5G RAM (approximately -- video RAM is shared with the system)
  • 1200x800 display
  • 80G 4800RPM drive

I kept an activity log during the installation, with rough "wall clock" times:

  • 01:00am Booted FC4T2 Install Disk
  • 01:04am Finished prompts, started installing disc 1
  • 01:08am Got "20 minutes remaining" message
  • 01:15am Started disc 2, "15 minutes remaining"
  • 01:27am Started disk 4, "2 minutes remaining" (note - no disc 3)
  • 01:28am "Performing post install configuration..."
  • 01:29am Done - reboot
  • 01:30am Graphical boot starts
  • 01:31am Firstboot
  • 01:32am GDM - login
  • 01:32am Desktop

After logging in, I opened a terminal window and spent a few minutes pointing yum to my local repository. I then installed the VMwareTools RPM, executed "vmware-config-tools.pl" to setup X, then rebooted. Finally, I executed "yum update" to get the (more than 300!) updates, then rebooted a final time.

I haven't had much time to play with it, but FC4T2 feels quite stable. Also, it feels like it boots much faster than FC3.

Hello,

I tried vmware-tools that comes with VMWare WKS 4.5.2 on the final FC4. All seems to work until I reboot, then I get an error about the mouse. You have any tips to get this solved?

Thx,
Frederik.

I haven't tried FC4 under VMware 4.5.2, but this patch from this blog entry might work. If you try this, please post the results here so others will know if it works or not.

Good luck!

Ok so I installed fc4 on vmware4.5.2 I used the patch there is still that problem with the 1 cunck not being patch I think its 3052 or something like that but I edited it manualy like suggested and bam yes it works. You also still have to edit the XF86Config file in /ect so you dont run into the mouse problem.
