The Southern California Linux Expo featured many interesting talks on a varity of OS issues. Now thanks to the Linux Public Broadcasting Network all the talks are archived in real video format. Highlights include a talk by Robert Love [interview] titled: Whats new in the 2.5 kernel", and Patrick Mochel [no interview, hint Jeremy] the author of sysfs, who explains what sysfs is and how it will effect users in 2.6/3.0.

All the videos are in RealPlayer format, I don't think I'll be
installing their spyware[1] anytime soon.

There are also badly formatted[2] PostScript documents of the talks.

[1] I have proof, it's all in the source code. Just ask nicely if
you can have a look too.

[2] The ends of some slides are cut off by the bottom of the pages

Cool, and all GPL. You learn something new everyday.
I'll apt-get it in a few minutes.

What do you have to hide that Real is going to discover? I have principles too, but come on. Do you drink Pepsi or Coke? Do you put gasoline in your car? These wares are pawned by evils greater than RealPlay, and I wonder if you've eliminated them from your life so readily.

Oh yeah, Real has already opened some of their source[1].

Nick

PS

If you're terribly worried, you don't need the source code to find out if Real is monitoring your porn viewing habits. I suggest tracing read and write system calls, and sniffing packets of suspicion for the Truely Paranoid (what would we do without you?).

I just watched Robert Love

I just watched Robert Love's talk. He gives a very nice, technical overview of 2.5's new features in contrast to the 2.4's state. It's a good starting point for getting some better insights about what's really going on in the kernel.
Featuring:

  • New block I/O interface
  • O(1) scheduler
  • Preemptive kernel
  • Rmap VM
  • Deadline I/O scheduler
  • NPTL
