No display 9 times out of 10

Hi,

I'm sort of new to this whole linux thing and I have to say that at the moment it is sorting of putting me off because of the problem I have.

When ever I boot up into fedora core 3 from my USB harddrive ( I felt I achieved something when i got that to work) My screen goes blank just before the login screen. I can watch it boot all the way up boefore that and its fine but at the login screen it either switches off my monitor of puts the display ot some really funny low frequency. The really crap thing is it works sometimes, but not very often

Now after a little bit of research I have tried a couple of things.
1.Installed ATI driver - failed as no XFree86 with core 2
2.Tried changing graphics card settings to other (standard vga) as it is a 9700Pro although (Fedora tells me its a 9500Pro) no sucess, problem still exists.

Now after a little bit of research I think the problem relates to the fact that my mother board has a KT400 chipset? I think its some thing to do with the AGPGART??

Any advice for a newbie, thanks Before I format this drive and put something else on it and just install firebird on windows.

hardware detection failing?

Have you checked the monitor cable? Maybe the hardware detection fails because of a loose contact. Another possible cause in this direction would be a DCC-unfriendly monitor, graphics card or video bios. Do other operating systems find the correct monitor? One of my (cheap) older monitors sends only one block of DCC information and as such identifies itself as needing a 4096x4096 mode with 10Hz.

Its not a hardware problem as the monitor is newish and is detected correctly its a 93SB and thats what it should be. Everything works fine when using windows xp and 98 so i reckon its a linux issue.

I reckon its some thing to do with AGPgart on my KT400 MB as I have read up about similair issue and they all seem to point there but I dont really have a clue how to fix it.
