Want to try a livecd and eventually install Linux on my HDD, but none of boot prompt combinations (under Knoppix versions 3.4 thru 3.6, Freesbie, etc) works. The PC is a TARGA Visionary WS PC 0210PLD 2400, from German discount chain LIDL, with specs as below:

Mainboard ASUS A7V8X

CPU Athlon XP2400+

Chipset: Northbridge: VIA KT400 Southbridge: VIA VT8235

RAM 768 MB

Hard disk: MAXTOR 6Y120LO

DVD-ROM: TOSHIBA SD-M1612

CD-R/RW: ASUS CRW-4816A

ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 9000Pro

Avance/Realtek AC’97 Soundcard onboard

ASUSTek/Broadcom 10/100 LAN onboard

Full system info (obtained form MS WindowsXP) available; can be posted if required.

Please help.

Thanks

Fedora Core 3 supports all the hardware you've listed out... give it a try. (The latest Mandrake and SuSE distros might also, but I haven't tried either of them)

I'd be curious to know what exactly causes the boot to fail.

I got an XP2400+ system on KT400 mobo (with 8235). I don't know about
your Radeon but it doesn't seem too recent, either. Should thus work,
at least on vesa driver if nothing else.

Had similar thoughts about Knoppix 3.6, but can't get it to boot with the known boot prompts (noscsi, nopcmcia, noapic, nodma, etc.) and their permutations and combinations

Hi, have you tried without X? That is an easy way to decide, if the graphics card is the problem. Once in the console, you can read the messages and try to get into X.

Is it possible to use text consoles instead of framebuffer?

The anonymous poster of http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/4349 even has 786MB RAM, but XP only uses 512MB of it. Why? Have you tried to reduce the memory with the "mem=" kernel parameter?
