I'll be offline again for a little while. Another hurricane. It's again predicted to make landfull a bit north of me, but they're never really sure. My computer is going back into plastic bags for now.
This new one, Jeanne, is smaller and moving faster than Frances, both good things. What annoys me is my brand new expensive hurricane shutters went back order so are only getting in Monday, one day too late for this one. Back to fastening plywood...
The hurricane went well north of us. We had fun watching the gusts blow through, and part of our (old) fence actually blew down, but otherwise no damage. The fence needed to be replaced anyway... Too tired today to catch up on the lkml, but hopefully tomorrow.

Damn, there's much trouble this summer, yes? - I hope that you "survive" this one like the others before!
Good luck,

One more reason...
Stupidly one more reason why hurricanes are unwanted...

Jeremy, please invent a Ultra-Fantastic-'something' and gather enough cash to stay 43 storey's below the ground. That way, atleast kerneltrap stays up on the 367th day in 2400 century too!! ;)

If jeremy could find a way to stay 43 stories below the ground in Florida, I think that'd count as his "Ultra-Fantastic-'something'". :-)

Hurricane-proof?
I've not yet really understood why people that live in Florida don't all live in sturdy reinforced-concrete houses? A reinforced concrete house is obviously going to be more expensive than a wood frame house or a trailer, but after replacing/repairing the latter two repeatedly after hurricanes, wouldn't it end up cheaper?
re: Hurricane-proof?
I read that building standards in Florida have been raised in recent years. My house was built in 1960 and is built of cinder-block. So long as the roof stays on, it should do well. Especially once the hurricane shutters are installed in the next couple of days.
you get what you pay for
I moved to Florida five years ago and hooked up with a great realtor, who basically told us not to consider any wood-frame home for the reasons you mention. I live in a concrete home, but not everyone thinks through these issues or has enough money if they did. It is kind of like wondering why not everyone eats a healthy diet, exercises, etc.

I live in The Bahamas so we usually field the hurricanes before they get to FL. We were hit by frances and jeane. You seem to prepare well for the storms. Hope your power is not out for too long ;).

re: I live in The Bahamas
Yikes, you guys have had it rough out there! Here in Ft. Lauderdale we've been quite fortunate so far, not taking the direct brunt of any of the storms. Some decent winds and rain, but nothing devastating. I even have power... :)
