Linux: 2.6.9-rc1-mm3, Adding Support For A New Architecture

Submitted by Amit Shah
on September 3, 2004 - 9:45am

Andrew Morton [interview] released the 2.6.9-rc1-mm3 patchset, announcing the merging of a new architecture support, m32r, and a status update for some of the current patches in the -mm tree.

Read on for the full changelog.

ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.9-rc1/2.6.9-rc1-mm3/

- Added the m32r architecture. Haven't looked at it yet.

- Status update on various large patches in -mm:

  - The packet-writing code is awaiting resolution of the
    abuse-of-elevator-fields problem.

  - perfctr is stalled. Mikael is planning on doing more work to make it
more compatible with perfmon, but he is busy for a while.

  - If the sysfs-backing-store patches get any older they'll start to
stink. Awaiting review input from AV.

  - ext3 reservation code is currently being optimised by Stephen Tweedie
(replace a serious-looking linear search with an rbtree). I'd expect
those patches to land in -mm soon.

  - ext3 online resizing still needs a bit of maintenance work done.

  - pcmcia driver model support: dunno. I guess we're waiting for rmk to
    get onto this.

  - i386 hotplug CPU support: I'm not sure that we should merge this at
    all - it's a testing-only thing.

  - key management code: mainly awaiting feedback from other fs developers
who may need such a capability. Also we seem to be unsure as to which
userspace interface will end up being used?

  - kexec: I guess this could be merged now, if we want kexec now. I'm
waiting for the kexec-based-crashdump patches to turn up.

  - cpusets: ready to go, I guess. Review input from various parties
    seems positive. Post-2.6.9.

  - reiser4: blah.

- Various random fixes and updates.

What a lovely attitude. It's time Reiser said "blah" in return, and put those DARPA dollars into Dragonfly or something. Let the linux-kernel people rot.

Status of Reiser4 in Kernel

Anonymous

All sniping aside, I'm curious... Anyone who's followed the entire lkml thread - what is the status of Reiser4 in the kernel?

As far as I understand:

  • There's concern about the possibility of R4 functionality
  • There's discussion about what to move into the VFS
  • Kernel developers seem to be saying that all this functionality can be moved into a userspace library

Is this a wrong summarization of the situation? Is Reiser4 acceptance moving forward or is it mired?

Thanks.

Among other things...

There is a race condition with the fact that RFS4 treats files and directories as the same object, and hard-linking directories is broken, on that vission.

AV (?) said he opposed putting RFS4 in its current state, so plenty of work needs to be done before it enters.

I'm sorry, namesys hasn't been putting money into linux-kernel to start with. That is part of their problem, they haven't layed enough groundwork to have the extended functionality of reiser4 go smoothly in. A hostile takeover of the VFS just isn't going to work; especially when they haven't even got a coherent plan of attack or basic locking analysis for the problems.

As far as Dragonfly goes, it is an experimental system with the entire VFS in flux at the moment, a userbase probably numbering in the hundreds, lots of unproven experiments going on in it. What's more, its VFS doesn't even support a basic journalling filesystem. So are you trolling, or just daft? If namesys just "put those DARPA dollars into Dragonfly or something", what do you think they would get out of it? I'll give you a clue: it belongs to Jack, and doesn't smell nice.

Can we stop nagging about Dragonfly and other experimental kernels?

Linux can be as experimental as you want it to be, just start hacking away and maintain your own fork. There are plenty of Linux people who want to see Reiser4 reach production quality and finally be included in Linus's tree. The controversy is about when this will happen and how it should happen. You can't answer that before you know definitely that it should happen. Many people are still debating this point and yes, it's iritating to many, but it has to happen before you can just include such a big project that has so much hype surounding it and so much potential.

Putting "DARPA dollars" into an experimental kernel is not going to get Reiser 4 included in a production system where we can all actually use it. It will merely divide the attention even more and delay the process at best.

Get a copy of 2.6.9-rc1-mm3 and test it. post bug reports, benchmarks, patches, media hype or whatever. Or get yourself a copy of the sources you're interested in and port the damn thing yourself.

Something to note

Just an aside, Reiser4 could quite easily be included in 2.6 and with probably quite little effort *without* its extensions, which could be added later if they prove themselves worthy enough to get intergrated into the VFS.

If they don't prove themselves worthy, then frankly I don't want them. I'll trust Viro, Torvalds, et al. over Hans Reiser when it comes to whether Linux's VFS should be modified to suit what he wants to do with the Reiser4 filesystem.

Full ack...

I think this is the jumping point. AV etc. should definitly not modifiy VFS to ReiserFS4s belongs, as far as Hans already gave an outlook that ReierFS4 is just the beginning, ReiserFS5 will bring much more invasive stuff.

The VFS crew should do a redesign when THEY think it is neccessary, and not when someone else likes them to do so! - We can't redo basic code every 5 years just because someone needs this because he's not able to use the old code for his features.

This is a question of trust, and the current VFS crew is doing a good job, so there's no reason not to trust them.

Well. . .

It's interesting that version 4 is designed to not be replaced the way ResierFS3 was. Hans has several obsessions, performance, efficiency, and semantics.

That's why v4 has a plugin archetecture, so that the block allocator can be updated independent of the block structure, which can be implemented inpendent of semantic changes.

Only change wanted by Hans Reiser for Reiser4+ is that everything is a file, including directories. Or that files can be directories in their behaviour, depends on how you look at it. This sort of stuff (fs semantics) ought to be in the VFS and not in the filesystem according to Linus et al, but not everyone is yet convinced that this can be done elegantly without breaking anything in userspace.
But you are right that Reiser4 can be included as a 'normal' filesystem till they work out those technical issues.

Only??

Anonymous

OK, the 'only' change I want is to make Linux no longer UNIX-like. I mean damn that stupid old UNIX has been around for 30 years, so by definition it must be obsolete, right? So I'll just come up with a couple of quick hacks to last us another 30, too easy. Somebody ring the Linus hotline, we've got get this in to keep up with Microsoft's "innovations".

Innovations

Not all innovations are a threat against Linux.

Simply because something's been done in a certain way for 30 years doesn't mean that its the best way to do it. Maybe, for whatever reason, alternatives weren't feasibile during that time.

I'm not saying rush out and make whole scale changes every 10 seconds, but let's not knock something just because its different.

It is 'backward compatible' with UNIX like filesystems, it doesn't mean Linux becomes something completely different. Files-as-dirs are a lot more elegant than extended atributes, which is the quick hack, and usefull for other functionality too. Now, it is true that the power of this simple change is so great that Linux as a whole could indeed become something totally different than classic UNIX, but that doesn't mean it should or will happen. And certainly not by simply introducing it in the Linux VFS.

Good idea

Go read lkml. Reiser has said much worse than "blah" to the other developers in the past. If he wants to take his ball and go home I don't think anyone would try to stop him.

re: reiser4

Actually the dragonfly people may benefit from this. This is opensource, and DFLY is moving some parts of the VFS to userspace. This could allow them to run reiser4 in userspace - without license problemas and being able to adapt it more easily.
