KernelTrap has retired the old logo, introducting our new mascott, Trap. Trap is of course a highly evolved Venus FlyTrap, illustrated by the gifted Mili Ombasic from Omili.com Designs, a Yugoslavian graphic design student living in Ottawa, Canada. In time, the new logo will be available on various pieces of KernelTrap memorabilia, beginning soon with our first t-shirt.
In addition to our new logo at the top of the page, we've also added story icons, the little scenes in which Trap stands with the appropriate kernel mascott. For those that prefer the site without such fanciness, simply login to your KernelTrap account and disable the images here (look for 'disable images' toward the bottom of the page).
It all makes sense now...
I've been seeing that logo on my bookmark in Firefox for a while now and had no clue what it was. Glad to see there is a reasoning behind it, I was begining to think some image path got horribly skewed. Interesting choice, thats for sure.
Question
Why does the plant look stoned? ;)
re: Question
Actually, the glazed look comes from too many hours staring at a computer screen, reading kernel development mailing lists...
Trap
Hi everyone,
Interesting comments about Kernel the Trap : )
To hear that the Trap looks stonned is a little surprising to me...
at first i looked at Linux and his expression, and honestly i didnt see much hapyness in his face : ) so i started from that, where the Trap should have some sort of neutral facial expression. However being more happy than any other was the goal. The fact that the mouth of the Trap is curved it makes it look (to me) like as if he is a little smiling and that is what we wanted. And his eyes are expressing a rather neutral and interesting feel, at least that was the goal.
So ''stonned'' isnt really the expression i was looking for when making the Trap. I hope that it is not the expression that people read when they look at it. If it is the case, i guess me and Jeremy will have to work on it again : ) which i certainly wouldnt mind at all since it has been a rich experience for me to work on this project.
Thanks for the comments !
Take care everyone : )
bye

Eyes
It's all in the eyes I'd say. The fact that the eyes are mostly closed makes him look that way.
re: Trap
I like Trap just the way he is, and have no intention of changing him.
We had an earlier version with the eyes open more, but I much prefer him this way as he has a friendlier face (which some may say only a mother could love)...
Re: Trap
I wasn't implying in any way that he should be changed, I just thought it was kinda funny. =)
Unhappy
Nice!
He looks unhappy to me, not stoned. Open his eyes a little, and he'll be happy (I think). Then again, open source logos can have something mysterious about them. It is part of the fun.
I'd look into making an alternative favicon though. Maybe use Trap's head for the favicon?
He seems to have penguins for lunch. Does he eat bugs too? ;-)
Love the facelift.
Beautiful.
creepy
Man your right he looks ultra stoned, maybe pain killers? Almost looks like he might freak out any minute and knife you.
Cool
It's nice, it's uniq, it's a good logo

Good mascot!!!
It's niceful and intelligent logo for linux, freebsd, netbsd, openbsd, dillon, and others linux-like.

creative. i love it.
Looks kinda eerie
Having this sharp toothed plant sneaking up behind the little penguin.. it looks like its about to eat Tux. Reminds me of the Little Shop Of Horrors.
Feed me! Feed me! What do
Feed me! Feed me!
What does this particular trap eat? C-code, technical mumbo-jumbo or nasty flames from the kernel-list? ;)
OK, I'm probably gonna get mo
OK, I'm probably gonna get modded as Flamebait for this, but to be honest - I hate it. While a Venus Flytrap is certainly a nice idea and while the logo is very well done on a technical level, it just looks awful - stoned, as someone else already pointed out, and also rather creepy.
No offense to Mili, but KT really deserves something better than this.

Trap
Wow, Thats cold...
lol
Atleast you are being honest : )
Mili
I'm sorry if what I said hurt
I'm sorry if what I said hurt you, but yeah.. I was honest, and I don't think there'd be a point in being anything else.
In any case, let me repeat that it's the character as such that repells me, not the technical execution of the design as such.

The BSD version
The BSD one looks a little perverted -- unnecessary touching going on there, old daemon buddy.
Perverted ?
I dont see how it looks preverted ? maybe it all depends which mind is looking at it.
Would you consider that Tux is looking perverted as well just because he is spreading his legs ? : )
I never thought of it until you mentionned, but to me your point isnt standing too straight : )
Take care
Mili
Something wrong
[No insult intended] While I like the idea, the realization looks strange -- maybe unrealistic lights and shadows give me this impression, maybe something else ... I'm not sure, but I can't get rid of a `there's something wrong with it' feeling ... it looks good, but it does not look right, if you understand me.
The head
I think the problem is the head, the rest of it looks fine, however it IS just a logo. :-) The content is what is important. If someone would do a better version, I'm sure Jeremy would consider it.. (put your gimp where your mouth is? ;))
Good logo, but take it off the topic icons
I like the logo, but adding it to every topic icon just makes them less useful. Which more clearly represents Linux -- Tux alone, or Tux with Trap?
I agree with some of the abov
I agree with some of the above comments. The trap shouldn't feature on the platform logos and maybe open up the eyes a bit. Apart from that; excellent choice of logo and very well illustrated. Nice text too.
My 2 cents !!
Just My 2 cents , I think it looks fine, the idea and the art are excellent, however the final result could improve. IMHO , these are my observations:
1. Why is he posing to the "screen"? if he had a more natural look (pose), it will give him more depth and meaning. hint. see most good open-source logos.
2. I don't like the pot he's in, makes him look like a word clip-art that wasn't ment to be a logo for this site. get red of it and have a more curvy finish of his end or something, or maybe consider giving him cute legs and feet?
3. The colors, although it seems that these mix of colors are the artists marks, they are too bright for the site!! he doesn't fit in very well. I think logos should blend in with their environment they are reprensenting.
anyway, that is only my opinion, take care! ;)

Very cute!
I really like it, and would like to thank the author for these great pieces of art. It might be a small detail, but it certainly is a cool one IMO. Thanks!
[I agree the plant looks stoned :D]
perhaps he is not stoned
But simply tired after a long day/night of kernel hacking...
I like the associated logos of him with Tux, Puffy, etc. Nice.
Favicon...
Well, I saw this logo for the first time as a favicon. I thought it is something carrot-like. Now I look at this 'Trap' and I think that even photo of a carrot could be better logo. It is awful!

I like it...
...and I like pairing the trap up with the other logos. Props!
I want a stuffed "Trap"
Let me know when you come out with the Trap action figure. He's cute
