Promise UDMA 100 PDC20265 and kernel 2.6.5 dma problems

Hi!

I compiled a vanilla kernel 2.6.5 for my debian sid (gcc 3.3.3) and got some problems with IDE controller PDC20265 UDMA100.

When i boot everything seems ok, but when trying to copy any file, i got these errors:
hde: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x60
hde: DMA timeout retry
PDC202XX: Primary channel reset
PDC202XX: Secondary channel reset
hde: timeout waiting for DMA
hde: dma_timer_expiry: dma status == 0x61
hde: DMA timeout error
...

And then lots of errors concerning to ext3 journaling and disk sectors error.

Under 2.4.25 everything seems very stable.

Have been seeing the same problem with 2.6.5, including all of redhats FC 2 2.6.5 builds (as of today, so at least the 356 build), plus all manner of 2.6.5 vanilla builds.

The problem is so bad that I've rolled my boxes back to 2.4 until this problem is solved.

Hey guys,

this problem is also hitting me, I am using a Promise 20268 (rev 02) controler, and get the above mentioned error messages. The drives on the controler often do a dma timeout, then I have to re-enable dma via hdparm -d1 to get my system usable again.
Luckily I am running a software raid5, so it is not easy to corrupt my filesystem, but in the last half year I had two hard crashs (nvidia binary driver :/), and after each my raid5 had to be rebuilt...during this time where there is no checksum to check the integrity of everything as in "normal" raid5 mode I caught some file system errors that forced me to "reiserfsck --rebuild-tree" to fix them up.
Hopefuly anybody has a fix for this, I can provide further details on request.

This bug only seems to happen when the kernel is under serious i/o load, such as when rebuilding a RAID array or when rsyncing an entire filesystem. Anything less, and the error does not seem to occur.

What I did to get these errors was booting the new kernel, copy one 8 MB file from one disk to another (nVidia installer) and execute the installer. When the installer do a checksum of itself, the errors came up.

I don't have any raid array. Just two hard drives attached to the same channel. No heavy I/O when i got the errors.

I have to amend my comment by saying that this is also the case for me. If I have any activity on the second drive, the DMA errors start and eventually the controller resets.

Testing out 2.6.6-mm3 now to see if it makes any difference. The bottom line is that this is clearly a 2.6.x problem for me, everything works perfectly if I boot into 2.4.26. This also occurs either with my RH 9 box running 2.6, my Knoppix 3.4 image, FC 1 and FC 2. The problem appears to be specific to the entire 2.6.x kernel line.

I'm running a Promise 20268 (rev 02) together with a Pentium II 350 MHz, Intel 440BX motherboard on a vanilla 2.6.5 kernel, and DMA has been shut down only once in 42 days of uptime.

Perhaps the speed of the other components in the system could have something to do with the problem - the Promise controller gets overwhelmed with data from fast processors / memory / PCI bus.

This really doesn't make sense either though, since the actual I/O is done by DMA (CPU speed shouldn't matter), PCI bus speed is fixed at 33 MHz (66 MHz on some newer systems), and memory bandwidth should be more than enough to keep the PCI bus filled with data anyhow...

Speed doesn't appear to be a factor, on the exact same system when running a 2.4.2x kernel the system is 100% stable with no DMA lockups. When booted into a 2.6.3-2.6.6 kernel, DMA lockups occur consistently anytime two drives on the same controller are accessed.

In that sense, the problem seems to be entirely related to the 2.6 kernel, and not to the hardware. Additionally, when other Linux distributions are used (Redhat 9, FC 1, FC 2, Knoppix and Suse) with 2.6 kernels, the problem occurs. So, it doesn't seem to be related to any particular distribution.

The problem only occurs with 2.6 kernels, and never with later 2.4 kernels (can not speak to kernels before 2.4.26). Again, the hardware does not appear to be the problem as 2.4 kernels work with it just fine.

Specific example: rsynced an entire 40GB drive to an 80GB drive under a 2.4.26 kernel via a PDC20265 controller with no problems. Attempts to do the same thing with a 2.6.6 kernel cause DMA lockups within a short period of starting the rsync (a few minutes perhaps).

Also, it appears this problem may have existed in earlier 2.4 kernels:

Perhaps the PDC2xxx_old.c code was not patched against these changes during the 2.5 development cycle? Don't have access to either the 2.4 or 2.6 code trees at the moment, so if someone could comment on this that would be extremely helpful.

It gets worse, its now happening on a system with only one hard drive connected to the PDC20265, no other drives. This is a really serious bug, that I wish someone would address. Its literally a show stopper for 2.6 on many, many systems. I recently purchased a high end laptop with a Promise PDC20265 in it, and this bug is making Linux almost useless on this laptop. Whats absurd is that older Linux distributions, like Redhat 9 with a 2.4 kernel work great, but Fedora 2 and Suse 9.1 are totally useless.

I appreciate all the hard work of the kernel developers, and know they will fix this, its just hard to be patient with something that worked on 2.4 but not with 2.6. Here's to all the kernel developers hard work, thanks for everything and we totally understand that bugs happen! If you can fix this soon, a lot of people would be ever so greatful!

Problem occurs when using third promise controller

I'm running 2.6.x on a smp system (dual celeron). With two promise ultra TX2 cards serving four IDE HDs on their four channels (RAID5) there's never been any problem. Now I added a third controller with one HD connected. All HDs are connected as master; one HD per channel. Now I get DMA-errors for the last added HD, not for the previously installed ones. There's no irq problem and no HD or controller problem (checked this by cross-changing).
Also the fifth HD is not shown at startup by promise BIOS although it is correctly seen at kernel boot.
Working with DMA set to 1 for the four RAID5 HDs and set to 0 for the fifth HD seems to be ok but is indiscutable for performance reasons.
Any more ideas?

I tried booting with param ide=nodma on bootloader, and the problem was solved. Enabling dma again with hdparm brought the problem up again. Then I disabled dma and everything went ok.

It seems that i got bitten by the exact same problem, bitten with a filesystem corruption thank you very much.

I have kind of a special setup with this controller/bios: BIOS doesn't detect the correct size of the harddrive and i'm not using the harddrive as/in RAID. Linux detects the size and everything correctly but soon after i started uncompressing a big bzip2 file dma went off with the same error message as with the original poster, i re-set dma with hdparm and then i couldn't access the harddrive and unfortunately for me, it seems that reiserfs was writing some important metadata which got corrupted.

Has anyone sent this to pdc202xx_old maintainers? I'll send something after i'm done fixing my HD.

This should be on TOP priority as it is corrupting data!

Basically, what someone has said there is "try all the 2.5 kernels and let us know which one this bug showed up in". A tedious task indeed, and all the more annoying that no one picked up this bug during the 2.5 development process, but hey, no one is perfect. So, if you want to help get to the bottom of this one, try out some of the 2.5 kernels to see if you can find out where the dev tree breaks.

You don't have to try all 2.5 kernels just do binary search: i.e. try 2.5.0 and 2.5.75 -> 2.5.0 works and 2.5.75 doesn't -> try 2.5.37 -> it doesn't work -> try 2.5.18 etc. It shouldn't take too long, really.

I tried every 2.6 kernel, and all have the bug. Also tried 2.5.50 and 2.5.75, which seems to be perfect, at least on my machine. Does this mean the bug was introduced on 2.5.75 -> 2.6.0 ??

After trying lot of kernels (2.5.50, 2.5.75, 2.6.0-test1,2,3,4,5,6), I noticed bug was introduced on 2.6.0-test5. A patch which was also on 2.4. series, allowing LBA48 on pdc20265 made this driver buggy.

I wrote this patch, it worked to me. In any way, i think someone related to ide development should improve this, 'cause lba48 seems to work on 2.4 series.... This should be a temp solution.

This patch is against kernel 2.6.7

Please, try this patch at your own risk, i'm not a real kernel developer. This patch is ok to me, so it should be ok to you.

Basically, it looks like a patch was added to handle a kernel lockup problem specifically with pdc20265 chipsets, but was either pulled back out or not added into 2.6 formally, not sure. Anyway, gonna try it now, as the changes are not in the 2.6.7 kernel.

I made this minor change to my 2.6.7 kernel this morning and everything has been working perfectly. I can confirm that this patch at least appears to solve the problem. So far, 8 hours later, a massive rsync between two drives on the same PDC20265 controller and all seems well.

Right now, I would say that this patch works extremely well. Would be curious what others experience.

I tried the above patch on 2.6.7 last night, and it seems to have worked with PDC20270.

Although I can't seem to get any drives on IDE 3 or 4 working when I have a drive on 1 or 2. Has anyone seen anything similar?

I don't know if it's a kernel problem, but I've got the same thing with a new laptop (Compaq X1012QV). Switching to UDMA4 (hdparm -Xudma4) helps but I would prefer to run UDMA5. :-) Does anyone know any solutions for that?

Hi all,
I've been experiencing this kind of problem with kernel 2.4.27 (perhaps 2.6 and 2.4 problems are different?) and was able to solve it in a weird way: my mobo is old (Asus P3BF) and my HDs are a bit newer (Samsung SP0802N and SV2044D), the disks can work in UDMA4 but my mobo only supports UDMA2, that was its setting and hdparm confirmed that it was being used. Setting DMA mode to UDMA1 in the BIOS did it, it won't time-out again and hdparm still reports UDMA2 as being used.

I've not tried to benchmark (perhaps it's using UDMA1 and slower?) or stress test the system after that, but if you can fiddle with your BIOS and report back, we may find something useful here :)

Still possible to lose interrupt if I stress test after using the solution above.

Seems very stable (running stress tests, games and imaging all at once) when I use 'hdparm -X udma1 /dev/hdX'. As stable as with 'hdparm -d0 /dev/hdX' (DMA off)? Time will tell :)

Problem:
- Kernel 2.4: DMA error, n.., Channel reset
- Kernel 2.6.11.6: DMA error, n.., but NO channel reset (they are BSOD :)

Tests/Suggestion:
- DMA off = no problems = very slow = not practical
- Disable APIC at boot command line (apic=off) and eventually maskirq as suggested in kernelring (dmesg below APIC) gives ok results in 2.6 kernel

This works a little better. There's still "Lost interrupt" on various disks but this is under heavy load (above 50MB/s on 8 stripped disks). The problem have been located to the PCI bus. No mather what PCI disk controller card you put in (PDC20269/old/new or Si0680), the result is the same. Using the disk controllers ON THE MOTHERBOARD gives NO ERROR. In other words, the PCI bus/chipset/kernel/driver/IRQ routing is f#cked. Can't wait for a newer 2.6 kernel...

pdc20262 dma problem

I noticed that the problem occures also on the pdc20262 U66/controler. I tried the patch for 2.6.7 but I got an error like "patch malformed". Udma1 is also unusable, and I do not want to go back to <2.4.20 where it works.
Any suggestions?

DMA and seek-errors, Problem was the drive maping

i've got strange seek and DMA-timeout problems with a pdc20265 using the pdc202xx_old driver.

i correct this with remap the drive C/H/S to what the controller tell at boot up.

i made a backup, clear the partition table (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hde bs=512 count=1), then fdisk /dev/hde. In fdisk i use the expert menu to input new values for cylinders, heads, and sectors (the ones i see at boot up from the controller). everything works fine then.
