hi,

i am trying to update to kernel-2.6.5-1.339.i686.rpm from http://people.redhat.com/arjanv/2.6/

everything is ok for a while, but i got misterious system freezes. No msg, no alerts, the machine just freezes. I have to force shutdown ( read unplug the power cable ) to have it back to works. If i boot with my atual kernel, 2.6.0-1.118 i have no problem.

does someone have any trouble using this kernel??

My machine is a IBM NetVista, with Pentium 4 - 1.6Mhz and 256MB of Ram. RedHat 9.0 ( +updates )

yes

I'm having similar issues on a AMD64 machine. I've been trying to narrow the problem down but can't seem to make any headway. I'm also using some arguably unstable kernel features like preempt. I'd recommend trying some other kernel configurations.

no prob, but..

try to get a kernel from the kernel.org website and compile it in and see if your system freezes. You know the RPM causes problems but what about the good ole fashioned way...
I could try it on my redhat 9 system with smp intels@1gig...

let me know

No problems

I have Redhat 9 with kernel 2.6.5, it is stable so far I can tell, a few minor problems like broken "left handed" mouse support, "Sytem monitor" which doesn't report used memory, but nothing which requires a reboot.

Ik have installed the kernel NOT with a RPM but compiled it from sources from www.kernel.org. Even patched the mouse driver to fake a left handed mouse.

same with kernel 2.6.6rc2

hi all,

i just download the http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/testing/linux-2.6.6-rc2.tar.bz2 and recompile it with default configs:

- run make memuconfig
- exit/save ( defaults, i did not changed anything)
- make bzImage
- make modules
- make modules_install
- make a new initrd...
- prepared grub
- reboot

it works fine for some time...and then freezes... no msg

i was looking to top and the unusual thing i noticed is that iowait is high...

I am using RedHat 9.0.

:-(

cheers,
Clovis Sena

I have the same problem with redhat 9 (did not upgrade the kernel). Mouse and keyboard don't respond, network gets disconnected, cannot ping the box. I have the following hardware:

Case: Antec Plus 660AMG
PSU: Antec TruePower 480W
Cooling: 4 Antec fans, CPU default heat sync and fan
Motherboard: Abit IC7-MAX3
CPU: Pentium4 3GHz (Prescott)
Disks: 2 X 80 Gb SATA Seagate
RAM: 4 X 512 PC-3200 Generic (400MHz)

Did anyone work out what the problem is?

hmm...

It could really be a number of things. I've got a P4 2.4ghz and a SOYO Dragon Ultra Mobo. But the newer 2.6.7 version seems to work fine, so whatever the problem was, it's fixed now.

Download the full source here: http://www.kernel.org
Then select 'F' on the 2.6.7 version to download the full source.
Unzip it and then go from there like usual.
