xwin install question

Hi All
Just joined kerneltrap and saw this forum and was wondering.
Can anyone tell me if there have been any significant
updates to the FBSD installer. I would like to try FBSD again
the last time I tried to install it that was 4.6 I found the menu install program kind of hard to deal with it seemed not
nearly as advanced as most linux installers (Please before the
flame wars start) I would like to try it again and I did get it to install just never could get Xwindows to run on either test box that I tried. No conflicts no errors but no Xwindows.

Is the 5.2 installer more advanced (easier to use, with more GUI and less menu driven features) than the 4.6 model?

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Hi Gary,
Freebsd's sysinstall is basically the same beast and still very much a libh affair. This is a *major* bikeshed in the FreeBSD community with many off and on discussions (err..flamewars, really) about what to do with the current sysinstall infrastructure. There has been some work around this issue but it's low in the queue considering all of the other changes that are going on. There are a few technical obstacles to revamping sysinstall and they require an overarching solution.
But really, sysinstall just takes some getting used to and although it may not be visually pleasing, it is a more than adequate tool for installation. I would recommend grabbing Absolute BSD or following along with the FreeBSD handbook to get acquainted. The Xwindow installation can be mostly handled in sysinstall, but I myself set it up manually after I've completely installed FBSD.

Thanks for the reply NJC
I don't think I'll buy any more books till I get it running.
I have the boxed set, so if the manual that came with the system
can't get me through the install well then it's probably something
I just shouldn't be fooling with anyway. What is "libh" is it a
FreeBSD library for config files? Possibly someplace to look for
errors.
Thanks again
Gary
