South Pacific is currently playing on Turner Classic Movies right now and here are a few observations:
- I was really surprised that this was in color. Not only that, but some absolutely breathtaking rich, saturated color at times. Very good for what was probably some sort of Kodachrome analog of process for movie film. The only flaw is color misbalance that is obvious to the untrained eye at times (maybe its there for artistic effect, oh, OK it is....I just saw an intentional color shift).
- It's scary how little naval uniforms have changed. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the uniforms received their last major update shortly before WWII. Actually not much has changed. I think the navy would have bothered me a hell of a lot less if it didn't pretend to be stuck in the 1950's in about every aspect.
- Musicals work out OK in plays, but somehow a bunch of singing servicemen kicking it on the beach just seems pretty gay to me. At least they could be singing songs about the navy sucking or something.
