South Pacific

South Pacific is currently playing on Turner Classic Movies right now and here are a few observations:

  • I was really surprised that this was in color. Not only that, but some absolutely breathtaking rich, saturated color at times. Very good for what was probably some sort of Kodachrome analog of process for movie film. The only flaw is color misbalance that is obvious to the untrained eye at times (maybe its there for artistic effect, oh, OK it is....I just saw an intentional color shift).
  • It's scary how little naval uniforms have changed. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the uniforms received their last major update shortly before WWII. Actually not much has changed. I think the navy would have bothered me a hell of a lot less if it didn't pretend to be stuck in the 1950's in about every aspect.
  • Musicals work out OK in plays, but somehow a bunch of singing servicemen kicking it on the beach just seems pretty gay to me. At least they could be singing songs about the navy sucking or something.

are you positive S.P. was a techincolor production? remember that turner ruthlessly acquired and colorized many of the black and white classics.

technicolor

Actually, I thought the same thing you did, so I checked....IMDB lists it as originally being in Technicolor.

You should write a musical (either in disco or punk, like Saturday Night Fever or Rock-n-Roll High School) about your adventures on the Florida. As I understand it, there really was a lot of singing and dancing going on during the course of a normal day.

awesome!

The songs would be about the navy sucking, dumbass coners, with a special feature from Jerry Mitchell called, "We got Sandwiches!"

I have to tell you the first time I read Lisa's comment I thought it said "adventures in Florida." I can see it now, the big musical climax with everyone singing and dancing around Rickover Circle and the camera shots from the top of the "A" school building next to the antennas. Of course they would all be joyfully singing about their 35-5's....

God, I can't wait for August. Navy sucks!

how about a broken lizard film about the nuke pipeline from RTC to sub: imagine Super Troopers without law inforcement but with nuclear power and weapons of mass destruction! it would be hilarious and, if done right, scare the shit out of the general populace.

That would be awesome

A broken lizard film? What is that? The idea isn't bad though. We used to joke on the boat about making a "Top Gun" kind of movie for nukes! Of course, running jokes would be that the hot female lead would be a patrol widow or something similar...

They're the new 'National Lampoon'. They created the movie Super Troopers and the new one coming out Club Dread.
