I tried to install kernel 2.6.1 into my sytem with the following Specs:
Processor: Athlon
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce2 MX
Audio: Ensoniq 5880 AudioPCI
Video Card: 3c905B 100BaseTX[Cyclone]
I was able to compile and boot to the new kernel with out problem. The problem arises when I tried to install NVidia Driver module from www.minion.de. I have a 2.4.20 kernel running on my machine with Nvidia kernel module and it runs perfectly. When I installed the patched NVidia driver (through single-mode) and I restarted the X server(during log out or reboot) from 2.6.1 kernel, the display hangs. I have to reinstall the kernel module to the 2.6.1 kernel before I can run X again.
a guess
The nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel both have to be the same version. If they are not not the same version it will cause X to hang sometimes. That might be the problem. It could be something else also.
other tips from minion.de
Did you try the other tips that are mentioned on minion.de?
Most of them are considered useful for system/X hangups.
Though it might be something different with my card(never found out),
it can be useful if you tried the old 3xxx driver. I always had problems with
anything higher than this version until now(using 2.6.1 with 5xxx for some days).
2.6.1 and Nvidia...
I believe that the current Nvidia drivers are incompatible with 2.6 series kernels, and that Nvidia is currently working on the issue with the hope of releasing compatible drivers asap...I haven't tried 2.6 but i'm basing my comment on what i've heard in the Libranet forums.

Suggestion
I had stability and speed problems with the newer 5328 patch. I suggest the all-in-one installer ready for 2.6 available here:
http://www.sh.nu/download/nvidia/
and I suggest the 4620 beta release since that gives me the best performance and stability (strangely enough...)
Kernel 2.6 and nVidia ...
Hi,
Take a look on :
http://www.minion.de/
http://kerneltrap.org/node/view/799
It works for me !
nvidia module kernel 2.6.1
had the same problame. i added the fallowing line to /etc/rc.d/rc.local.
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.1/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko
you may have to look at your /lib/modules/2.6.1/kernel/drivers/video directory to find the nvidia driver on your system. this line well tell the system to load the module at startup. startx works after the module is loaded.
No More minion.de?
Its now a year later from the start of this thread... and minion.de seems to be no more, at least for the nvidia kernel module is concerned.
I am now using Kernel 2.6.10 on Slackware 10.1 with the NVIDIA 1.0-7174 drivers installed. When the installer built the kernel module, it did it as nvidia.o .. and not nvidia.ko (I have no idea why?)
So the insmod command does not work, and loading the nvidia driver does not work at all when Starting X, I have to revert back to the stock driver (nv) - Which sux because everything is jittering and slow and broken.
Please tell me someone has a fix for this ... because NVIDIA doesn't like replying to emails.
