Marcelo Tosatti has released Linux kernel 2.4.25-pre4. Marcelo released this as 2.4.25-pre4 because this prerelease is continuing with things that was merged into the 2.4.24-pre tree, as 2.4.24 [story] was a security release.

Hi,

Moving on with the 2.4.24-pre tree, here is 2.4.25-pre4.

It contains an ext2/3 update (mostly forward compatibility related), the
usual architecture updates (this time S390, PPC64/32, SH), osst update,
TG3 bugfixes, amongst others.

Some of the fixes listed in this changelog (the rtc fixes, the IrDA "log
buster" fix and the netfilter MASQUERADE oops) were already in other
-pre's, they got removed and re added for technical BK reasons.

So 2.4.24 is 2.4.23 with do_mremap() fix only, and without any bit of 2.4.24-pre, right?
Seems like whatever numbering scheme you choose it ends up breaking somewhere...

Right.

Right, though it has some other small fixes too.

so actually 2.4.25-pre tree is the same as 2.4.24-pre tree.

You're right: I was kind'of expecting a -pre1 ...

Epoll?

Is there any chance that epoll will be backported to the 2.4 kernel? There is a patch for 2.4.24 on the epoll webpage:

http://www.xmailserver.org/linux-patches/nio-improve.html#patches

Epoll does seem to be stable and not too intrusive.

I know that people who want to have it can just get 2.6 or apply the patch, but for me as programmer it would be great to be able to just use epoll without demanding from people to have an unstable 2.6 kernel. It would promote the use of epoll in Linux applications, making epoll more widespread than it is now. Currently epoll is the future for Linux, but we can't use it yet, because there are people still running older, stable kernels. With the recent exploits, this seems the perfect time to make epoll supported widespread. ;-)

To be on the safe side it could be made EXPERIMENTAL, even if it seems to just work.
