Then when Linus decides to split up 2.6 bk tree to 2.7 development branch. It might come tomorrow, it might come after a year, no one really knows.

i believe 2.3 was forked off of 2.2.2 and i think 2.1 was forked off of 2.0.3.... so it probably will be in the next few releases... but your guess is as good as mine
2.6 has a long way to go to be 'stable' imho. Get 2.6 and driver issues etc stable. Then wait a few point releases for bugs/exploits. If it's all quiet i'd personally fork from there and create the 2.7 development tree.
Version numbers are mostly abstract. Are there any new features that we know will be in 2.7 that wont be in 2.6? 2.7 will fork when a few new "superhighly experimental" things pop up. Just give it time.
I wish 2.7 would fork as soon as possible and cutting edge developers like Linus and Andrew (deity of your choice bless them) move over there. 2.6 is long past due to be handed to someone who will focus on stabilizing it.
The speed of development in the 2.6 has been great, lots of new features and drivers make it in the kernel at lightning speed.. but the occasional 2 week focus on bug fixes prior to release just doesn't cut it for a stable kernel.

well...
it surely is stable now...
will 2.7 ever come out?
Think about it
