I have been testing the 2.6.0 kernel for about a week with the Fedora Core 1.
After experiencing some difficulty in building the 2.6.0 kernel from source , I located the kernel-2.6.0-1.104.i386 RPM package and installed the source , documentation , and precompiled kernel.
The results to date are as follows:
The system boots up reliably and seems a little faster than with the 2.4.22 kernel.
My ide DVD read write drive is now loaded as /mnt/cdrom.
My read/write CDROM appears in the boot up message as
drive hdd , but attempts to mount the CDROM as /mnt/cdrom1 fail. The two hard drives appear as hda and hdb.
The DVD is installed as hdc.
If I reboot the system and select the default 2.4.22 kernel
both the DVD and CD drives will mount.
I have installed the ALSA 1.0 sound driver which seems to work properly under the 2.6.0 kernel. I can play music CD's mounted in the DVD drive and play sound effects from WAV files. I have also installed the mplayer package and can now play MP3 files. So far I can see the file structure on a DVD movie disk but can not get the mplayer to actually display a DVD movie.
My logitech Extreme 3D USB game stick goes missing under the 2.6.0 kernel. Attempts at running the jstest utility report no device found. If I reboot to the 2.4.22 kernel , the jstest shows that the game stick is alive and well.
Inspection of the 2.6.0 kernel by running lsmod seems to show that the game stick drivers are being loaded under the 2.6.0 kernel. However , they do not work.
I am having similar trouble with my canon scanner.
The 2.4.22 kernel shows that a scanner device exists.
The 2.6.0 kernel does not see a scanner device.
I can not actually run the scanner using xsane with either kernel. I have a Canon canoscan d1250 scanner that works when I boot under windows. ( The scanner was relatively cheap, but works well under windows) . Perhaps I have purchased a WinScanner that has the same problems as my WinModem. I have not found any reference to anyone using this particular scanner model with linux yet.
Hopefully these driver problems will be resolved with in a month or two when the 2.6.1 kernel is released.
The most puzzling issue I have experienced is the mouse and keyboard operation inside a console window.
At random intervals the mouse and keyboard seem to run away and get stuck when I am running a console window editor.
I have created a short cut icon to the terminal on my desktop.
On at least two instances when I clicked on the icon to start up a console window , the system started to create an endless sequence of terminal windows. I eventually was forced to do a hard reboot of the system to stop the runaway.
I have more frequently seen a problem where the keyboard seems to be sending an endless stream of carriage returns and the mouse sends excessive scroll up or down commands.
The kernel I am running has kernel pre-emption enabled.
I have not seen this problem prior to using the 2.6 kernel
some solutions
The solutions for most problems are available here.
however, ive been trying for over a month now, but havent been able to get rid of the cdrom problem.

Re: the cdrom problem
replying to myself :). for those of u who faced the same problem, try switching to kernel of a later version. seems, to be kernel bug, or is it ?
