2.6.0 kernel installation with Red Hat Fedora Core 1

I have down loaded the newly released 2.6.0 kernel and

installed it over a previously installed version of
Red Hat Fedora Core 1. I now have the original 2.4.22
kernel as well as the new 2.6.0 kernel ( in addition to
Windows ME dual boot) on a 700 MHZ compaq duron

I have had some success and some difficulties with the 2.6.0
kernel.

I have had significant difficulty getting the correct options
when I run make menuconfig. More often than not I get a kernel panic when I install the new kernel. The solution
seems to be to erase everything associated with 2.6 and start
over from a fresh 2.6 tar file. It would be nice if
someone could create a more user friendly build/make
utility. Apparently it is possible to select incompatible
options when you build resulting in a kernel panic.

At present I have the 2.6.0 kernel running fairly stably ,
but some of my hardware that was available under the
2.4.22 kernel has disappeared.

My DVD-read/write drive is recognized as a Cd . however,'
my second read/write CD has disappeared entirely.

Initially my sound card disappeared. I have subsequently
installed the alsa-1.0 driver from source.
as follows
unpack alsa-1.0 source driver tar file
./configure
make
make install
sh snddevices
sh alsasound start

At this point the sound works. however, the sound test
utility in the Fedora menu says that it can not load the
driver. When I reboot the sound goes away.

However, If I add the "sh alsasound start" command
to my start up script the sound starts working again.

Sound quality is very good.

My Logitech USB flight stick has gone missing even though
modprobe seems to show that the ADI and joydev drivers are
installed.

My Logitech Messenger WebCamera does not work
However, it did not work with 2.4.22 either.
Apparently I have the misfortune of buying a web camera that
is not yet supported by linux.

My PCTEL789 winmodem has stopped working.

The custom linmodem driver that I used for 2.4.22 will
not compile under 2.6.0. The modem driver compilation
complains that it can not find modversions.h

So far I have not figured out how to get the DVD to play
movies. ( the DVD was recently added and it works when I start
up my dual boot machine with windows ME) . I have downloaded
some linux DVD drivers but have not installed them yet.

Also I have a recently purchased Canon 1250 DU scanner which
is not recognized under the 2.6.0 kernel. I have not tried
it under 2.4.22. It may be another "windows only" hardware
device.

I have successfly patched the nvidia-4496 linux driver
with a patch file from www.minion.de.

I have full 3-D graphics including Opengl and GLUT and
SGI performer.

Also when I run make menuconfig , the screen will start
flashing and refreshing excessively for a varying
amount of time.

Hopefully , there will be some patches and additional info
coming early next year to resolve some of these issues.

It looks like there is a long way to go before Linux replaces windows.

I'm going to break this down

I'm going to break this down for you. You've presented a lot of issues. All of them valid to some extent. You are definately the type of person that should wait until Fedora Core 2. Why? The 2.6 kernel will be supported and the RH configuration tools will support it.

-> 2.6 no longer uses OSS, but Alsa. RH's tools for configuring the sound card will most likely NOT work until they have been patched to support Alsa. The configuration aspect is very, very different. I'm glad that you were able to get it to work though.

-> The mouse detection code has recently (in the 2.6-test series) been overhauled. I've experienced problems with this on a Logitech (Dell labeled) mouse. I was unable to get the mouse wheel to work. Whether or not this is related to your mouse problem or not, I don't know. I don't know much about that particular piece of hardware.

-> The DVD writer/CD reader drive problem is most likely a configuration problem. What does the output of dmesg tell you about those drives??

-> In regards to your winmodem, you can expect drivers written for 2.4 to magically work for 2.6, can you?? Chances are they need very few modifications to work, but someone has to make those modifications.

-> The issue with your DVD is rather simple. mplayer or something similar is going to play it, but your are going to need to decrypt the CSS encoding with a program called DeCSS. It's illegal in the U.S., therefore RedHat cannot distribute it. There should be plenty of information on the Internet in regards to configuring this.

-> Instead of compiling it yourself, use the RPM's out of rawhide.

There are problems in the 2.6 kernel. Many of these problems are going to be ironed out through user testing. 2.6.1 and 2.6.2 will definately be promising. The same thing happened with the 2.4 tree. I d

Well: as the anonymous said before:

I can't give you a direct link(it's illegal))

so get the libdecss, (ask google, since I can't give you a direct link...)
