SATA ports not recognised in 2.6.30 on MA790FX motherboard

I'm trying to use the 2.6.30 kernel, but one of my two machines has a Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 mother board. Neither the hard drives plugged into two external eSATA ports nor those plugged into the two GSATA ports at the bottom of the motherboard are being recognised. It will recognise hard drives in four other SATA ports.
Perhaps the kernel isn't recognising the Gigabyte Sata2 controller which seems to be near the problem ports. I'm not sure its a controller. I'm just guessing it is, because there used to be something called jmicron controller that I had issues with. On the Block diagram (page 8 of the motherboard manual is attached), the Gigabyte Sata2 is between the ports and PCI express bus.

Is this the right place to report issues of this kind? If not where is the right place?

Thanks!

what (which SATA controllers) does lspci (or lspci -v) list? did it work with older kernels? did you configure and build the kernel yourself and which SATA2 drivers did you include?

WTF is a GSATA port? If it's just a jmicron SATA2 chip they should say so and not put their own name on.
