Linux: The Future Of The 2.4 Stable Kernel

2.4 stable kernel maintainer Marcelo Tosatti posted an announcement to the lkml titled "Linux 2.4 future", in which he describes his plan for the 2.4 stable kernel [forum], acknowledging the pending release of the 2.6 stable kernel [forum]. Having released 2.4.23 only a few days ago [story], Marcelo says that in 2.4.24 we can expect to see fixes for pending problems which might require somewhat intrusive modifications. Also in this kernel new drivers will be accepted, "for example, [the] Cyclades PC300 driver, input userlevel driver support, or other sane [drivers] which might come up".

After 2.4.24 is released, Marcelo says that the 2.4 kernel will go into maintenance mode, in which it will only be getting fixes for critical issues and security holes. Read on for Marcelo's email.

Hi,

The intention of this email is to clarify my position on 2.4.x future.

2.6 is becoming more stable each day, and we will hopefully see a 2.6.0
release during this month or January.

Having that mentioned, I pretend to:

- Fix pending problems which might required more intrusive modifications
during 2.4.24. New drivers will be accept during this period (for example,
Cyclades PC300 driver, input userlevel driver support, or other sane
driver which might come up).

- From 2.4.25 on, fix only critical/security problems.

I'm waiting for the email to show up in the archives -- there's nothing to link to yet, as Marcelo's email was only just sent...

Intend to..

I assume where he says "pretend to" he means "intend to"... so let's get the pedantry out of the way straight up to allow normal discussion.

Sounds like...

a Freudian slip.

Portuguese glitch

"Pretender" in Portuguese means "to intend". Lots of nasty translation pitfalls here.

A story: adverb termination -mente has the same function as -lly. The word "atual" means "current, up-to-date" instead of "true". So, "atualmente" is "nowadays" instead of "truly".

Tennis player Bjorn Borj did an ad for a whiskey brand in which he said, "well, actually I don't drink much but when I do I drink Natu Nobilis." Guess HOW that was translated!

...and that should probably be Borg (as that one woman in Star Trek First Contact said, 'are they Swedish or something').

'g' and 'j' are often pronounced similarly in Swedish, though.

The translation...

...maybe read back in English:

"Well, nowadays I don't drink much, but when I did I used to drink Natu Nobilis."

It's a fellow Brazilian's wild guess.

Just use xmbmon without any need to patch your kernel.
