The system droops periodically, it is sometimes impossible to reboot her - file system is not accessible.

I changed hard drive and sata port, became a little better, but then errors appeared again

I'm stumped trying to track down the below intermittent problem.....
I've confirmed this problem on 2.6.19, 2.6.20 and 2.6.21.

Anybody no ideas?
whole year pass!

There was a solution... now its fixed^^

June 17, 2008 - 4:13am
Anonymous (not verified)

I am using UBUNTU - with a JMicron 20360/20363 sata board.

Symptoms: The system freezes due an sata-error randomly in the first 30 minutes after startup. If you now restart, everything works fine until next complete shutdown.

Suggestion: I am using windows XP for gaming too. Maybe the windows driver changes something in the controller registers. I never tried out, if the system freezes only after a windows boot.

I found a solution, that worked for me. Add pci=bios idle=halt to the kernel boot parameters.

Unfortunately the Problem returns with the latest 2.6.24-17-generic kernel.

development of linux reached a deaf impasse

kernel 2.6.24-17-generic is similarly subject to this vulnerability allowing to lose all information on SATA driver and physically to spoil hd driver!!!

MSI BIOS update policy is unacceptable

May 22, 2008 - 12:31am

After I was using this vendor (MSI) for many years, the new "must update BIOS using CURRENT version of [Microsoft] Internet Explorer" policy [obviously using Windows] shows this PRC/Taiwanese corporation is [now] running at the same (gutter minimal) intellectual level as the typical United States corporation, only concerned about today's (perhaps this hour's ???) profits. So it really not a technical problem, and the only answer is to spend a few more USD/EUR/RMB/Rupee next time you buy a motherboard to avoid such a problem. Corporations such as MSI deserve oblivion very much.

using ubuntu gutsy

Had this problem since edgy and it keeps getting worse and worse. My computer freezes every 20-30 mins or so and crashes every few hours. This happens a lot more often when memory is almost full. Can this be a swap issue? Did anyone check to see if something changes when memory load is high/low?

Thinking this might be a kernel - driver issue I switched to linux-kernel-386. So far had ONE freeze and one hard reboot in a few days (after having dozens of the former and 10-20 of the latter) so maybe this is a clue...

can you try with 2.6.26?

2.6.26 is not in the repo's yet. I'll wait patiently...
I've used Ubuntu for a while but I'm a complete newbie in kernel compilation. Is there a way to upgrade via repository ?

with 2.6.24-19-386 on Gutsy so far so good: 5 days with high memory and CPU usage (re-encoding my entire video collection to h264) and the log is clean...
