Hello,
I'm just reading about these new WD drives (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=385). It appears they lower power consumption by reducing speed from 7200 to 5400 RPM. Has anybody tried them on linux? Any feedback?
Thx,
Erasmo.
It uses WD GreenPower? May be problematic
It appears that this drive is using WD GreenPower technology.
There is a lengthy thread on lkml, called "Western Digital GreenPower drives and Linux" - this drive uses that, too. GreenPower seems to be parking the head way too often, which may lead to a premature death of the drive...

...leading to more HDs being
...leading to more HDs being bought, and inherently, produced. That's not fucking green at all.
LOL Don't Inform the Idiots
We don't want people to know that it's not green to produce more of the product, we just want them to think its green to save energy with your Western Digital HDD, keep America Stupid.
If it *just* spun down to
If it *just* spun down to 5400 that would be great, in fact, I paid special attention to buying 5400rpm 3.5" drives (a WDC WD400EB-00CPF0, thankfully without the parking crap) for my desktop because they are slightly more silent. But parking is bollocks.
Western Digital Hard Drive
Yeah, seems like a nice 5400 Western Digital Hard Drive would work for me, if it can help me keep power use down.
