Quotes in the RSS feed

Can you add something like "[QUOTE]" in the subject of the quotes in the RSS feed (or alternatively remove them, or have a separate RSS feed)?

It's fine on the homepage because you can distinguish them from the normal articles (indentation, "submitted by" line, ...). But in the RSS, there are no such visual cues. And while it's useful to open the link to an article to read the various emails that you quoted, opening the link for a quote is pretty much useless.

Thanks

Good idea

Thanks for the feedback.

I have added "Quote:" to the title of all quotes. Hopefully that will prove sufficient. I'm also increasing the number of nodes listed in the RSS feed so you still get the same amount of actual content there.

Note that a link to the message being quoted from is included in both the web page and the RSS feed, should you want additional context. Comments on quotes are also possible, so viewing the quote page may prove interesting at times.

Thanks. We'll see how it goes but I'm afraid it will not "flashy" enough. I mean by that that one has actually "read" the subject to see if it's a quote or not as opposed to just "looking" at it.
I understand that a "[quote]" or "-- quote:" would be ugly on the homepage. But maybe there is a way to have it added only to the feed itself?

Yes, of course, I should not have said "useless" but "a lot less useful", and maybe add a "to me" for the form too :p.

I really don't understand why adding "[quote]" is any better than adding "Quote:". Are you saying that when reading the RSS feeds you're simply ignoring the title? Is it not visible to you, or do you simply out of habit gloss over the title? You certainly should be seeing "Quote:" in the feed.

Ah, with more thought I'm guessing you simply haven't seen the change in the feed yet. Either 1) my web page is still serving you a cached version before I added the "Quote:" text, or 2) your RSS reader may not pull updates on feeds. Either way, when the next quote appears you'll see the "Quote:" in the actual feed. So I believe this is solved for you and that as future items show up in your RSS feed you'll have no problems differentiating between stories and quotes.

I do see your changes, no problem there.

What I mean is that I indeed just glance over the titles. So depending on how much time I have, I can quickly skip over the ones that look less interesting. It's a habit I took because some feeds dump so many uninteresting posts, like the "morning/evening/saturday/sunday news" from Blue's News or the "Amzing/Breaking/..." from Digg.

Which is why titles for quotes now start with the word "Quote:"... I can't make it easier to scan than that.

What I would really like is two separate feeds for quotes and the rest. I don't really want to subscribe to the quotes. Is that possible?

Thanks!

The default RSS feed is everything that shows up on the front page. However, you can also build your own showing you only the content you're interested in...

In my opinion quotes should be taken completely away. They bring nothing valuable and the articles are buried/lost because of so damn many quotes. I think quotes belong inside articles - no need to have them separately on the main page.

I even feel that less comments to articles are being made now because quotes make the articles bury faster.

I'm sorry you don't enjoy the quotes. One the whole, the response toward quotes has been very positive, not just in comments and emails, but also in the measurably significant increase in website traffic.

That said, just because the quotes are on the front page, you're not forced to view them. If you want to see just the news feed without the quotes, click the News link up toward the top of the theme...

Conversely, anyone interested in only quotes can click the quote tag.

Thanks for the tip! If I can remove them, all is well.
