There is a function to find the specific message in KernelTrap archive if you know the message-id, but there is no reverse function: to show the message-id of a message archived in KernelTrap, in order to find the same message in another archive.
I know, I know, who would want to leave the KernelTrap archives... :)
Still, it might be useful in cases of bugs like the message truncation, to be able to at least read the affected message.
thoughts
Certainly I wouldn't mind if KernelTrap's mail archives were so useful and reliable that you preferred to use them. In reality, the primary incentive was to save myself a lot of time in writing articles as instead of manually pasting together a bunch of emails and then prettifying them, now I simply add some short wiki-like tags which get automatically replaced with the properly formatted messages.
As for your request, unfortunately simply posting the message-id is not an option as from that in many cases spam harvesters could easily harvest email addresses (this is dependent upon how your mail client generates message ids). I could, however, provide the message-id field in a munged format, would that work for you? (ie, convert @ to _at_, etc.)
Re: thoughts
As a huge GMANE fan, it pains me to say that I find your archives much more comfortable for day to day browsing... :)
I doubt the spam harvesters would actually be able to get the email address from the message-id, only the domain maybe which is not that useful.
Besides, even if you are right, they can already do it by harvesting lkml.org, it has a "headers" link which shows all headers, message-id and all, so you won't really be exposing anything that spam harvesters don't already have access to.
Anyway, it really isn't a big deal, please don't waste time on it if you don't think it's worthwhile.
Sure, that would work just fine, but only if it's not too much trouble for you.
Message-id's available
Flattery will get you everywhere... ;)
Please don't stop making good suggestions on how the mail archives can be improved. I can't promise to implement everything, and certainly not instantly, but I do intend to continue improving things.
I have no control over someone else's website. I do have control over my website.
I've added the feature as a per-user option, disabled by default. Thus, to see message-id's you need to go to "my account >> edit" then scroll down to the "Mail archives" section. Check the "Display message-id" box. Then, when viewing messages you will see the message-id in the header. They're not munged now, but may become so in the future.
Thanks
Well, with the "next" links and the message-ids, it's pretty much perfect for me. Hopefully someone else can come up with further ideas for improvement.
Thank you for the quick responses.
