Hello everybody,
new QtMoko images v15 based on QT 4.6 are now out! Images for flashing or SD
card can be downloaded from here [1].

QtMoko is stable distribution that combines Debian/Qtopia using QT 4.6 on
framebuffer as toolkit. It has also compatibility layer for running X
applications. More information on our homepage [2][3][4][5][6].

Changes from previous version:

* Using QT 4.6 (with 2 patches that should be upstream in QT 4.6.1)
* Better QVGA support (no flickering for QMplayer videos now)
* Reading contacts from SIM in unicode (Ant)
* Wlan - fixed WPA-PSK with AES (Torfinn Ingolfsen)
* Fixed RTC problems after apt-get upgrade
* 10MB smaller image size - no python preinstalled now
* Added icon for sharing GPRS connection with PC
* Disabled modem multiplexing - fixes problems with hang in dialer after boot
* For me GPRS is now more stable (with no multiplexing).
* Powering up modem from code
* Fixed alsa scenario for voip
* Enabled voip and google talk
* New applications

Don't expect any miracles with this version. As a phone it should be quite the
same as v14. For web it's probably better because of improved webkit in QT. As
for developer i am happy that we can keep up QT up to date. I am also very
happy about applications. There is now excelent GPS application NeronGPS and
web browser Arora in package feed so dont miss them ;-)

I have also enabled VOIP for this version and replaced voip alsa state with
the one posted some time on mailing list. So maybe voip will now work. If
someone makes it working please let me know.

However there is probably still bug that incoming SMS is sometimes delivered
after phone reboot. Any help on this issue would be very welcome.

I hope there are no new bug and you will enjoy this version ;-)

Cheers

Radek

Radek,

When trying to build QtMoko V15 myself I get the following error:
qtmoko/qt/src/corelib/io/qfsfileengine_unix.cpp:1286: error: ‘QT_MMAP’ was
not declared in this scope

How did you compile it? Or is this problem solved with the upstream patches
of QT 4.6.1?

Yes, you can. If you first install QtBackup and create a backup with it.
The you can use the installer-image which will flash the new QtMoko V15 and
it will restore the backup after flashing. Here you can find the
installer-image: http://www.openmobile.nl/pages/downloads.php#qtm15. Just
unzip to your sd and neo in nor mode, selecting boot from sd.

The main question is: Exist Debian packages of QtMoko?

This would solve a lot of upgrade issues. I once tried building QtMoko on my
Freerunner but since I had to patch the build system, to restart the make
process after internal compiler errors at least once per day (by increasing
swap and reducing the optimisation level) and didn't finished compiling
in approximately two weeks I stopped :-(

Sure, but also it would be a lot of additional work. New versions do not
contain just new /opt but also changes to init scripts, various
settings, removed and newly added packages, new kernel and other stuff.

It's also easier if you can fix bugs against one certain configuration
of the whole system - that's clearly advantage of distributing whole
image.

So yes, i would be nice to have debian package, but i cant
create/maintain it (because of time constraints). Somebody else would
have to do it.

I havent seen this message. It's most likely that you have wrong qt
version. To check if your qt is ok do:

cd path/to/qtmoko-from-git
git submodule (will output SHA digest of QT submodule)
cd qtopiacore/qt
git log (should display on the lastest commit the same SHA as above)

If you need to checkout correct qt you have to do something like:
cd path/to/qtmoko-from-git
git submodule init

I have written small howto in README. It can be seen on the front page
at http://github.com/radekp/qtmoko under the file list.

Git submodules are a little messy on the first try, but once you git
used to them it's quite ok. And it's the only maintainable way how to
keep up with QT's git.

Hope it helps

Radek

Radek,

The key used by pkg-fso-keyring is expired, maybe you can change section 4.6
of your debian_rootfs_howto.txt into:

wget
http://pkg-fso.alioth.debian.org/debian/pool/main/p/pkg-fso-keyring/pkg-fso-keyring_20...
dpkg -i pkg-fso-keyring_2009.09.12_all.deb
rm pkg-fso-keyring_2009.09.12_all.deb

When using this package I don't get the key-expired message when using
apt-get update.

Radek,

By removing python from the image, gpsd is also missing, therefore TangoGPS
(under QX) will not run.
Maybe its better to leave python (and gpsd) a part of the image?

I also noticed that you removed multiplexing, does this mean we cannot use
GPRS and calling at the same time?

It can be installed via apt-get and gpsd can be configured to start on boot. Or
is there any problem so that it does not work this way?

I think NeronGPS is much better then TangoGPS, it's native app and we can save
10 MB (packed). Maybe i am wrong, but the number of people that prefer
TangoGPS over NeronGPS must be small and it is quite simple to install tango

Yup, but it wasnt working before too. I'd like to get multiplexing back, but
it must be without bugs first and in v15 it was causing at least 2 bugs (one
with Qtopia stuck in call screen - very annoying and nearly 100% reproducible
after first boot and second is with GPRS - now it starts always, before you had
to try several times).

So the plan is now to disable multiplexing and hopefully after it's fixed it
will be back.

Radek

Yoric,

The installer-images I've created are intended to flash from sdcard instead
of dfu-util and are to be used as described here:
- Prepare your sdCard, create partitions: 1=vfat, 2=swap
- Extract the content of the zip-file to the first partition of the sdcard
(directly from PC is the quickest way to go)
- Boot from sdcard (nor-mode, that is aux+power and choose 2nd option)

Now the phone will be flashed, this is what will happen:
- flash qi.img
- reboot
- flash kernel.img
- flash rootfs.img
- restore qtbackup.tgz (optional, see below)
- reboot
- start QtMoko

If you used QtMoko before and you have created a backup with QtBackup (found
in the software-feeds) there will be an qtbackup.tgz file on the sdcard, if
this file is found by the installer-image it will be restored, this way you
can preserve contacts, documents, settings, applications etc over
different-versions of QtMoko.

The installer is created to flash the phone from the sdcard.
There are a few files, qi.img, kernel.img, rootfs.img, those are the one you
can also flash using dfu-util, where qi.img is the bootloader, kernel.img is
the kernel (uImage) and rootfs.img is the jffs2 file.
