You can do this to twiddle with volumes:
alsactl restore -f /usr/share/openmoko/scenarious/stereout.state
alsamixer
alsactl store -f /usr/share/openmoko/scenarious/stereout.state

this goes for any of the files in there, like gsmhandset.state
