What's wrong with this NIC IP addressing scheme?

Hello folks

I have encountered a problem getting 2 NICs on the same machine to
interact. From the machine itself, I can ping my LAN (192.168.1.*) on
NIC vr0 (IP 192.168.1.1) but not the router (192.168.1.254) on NIC rl0
(10.0.0.1). The router is an ISP provided model & I can ping it
whenever I assign either NIC the 192.168.1.1 address.

I think that the IP range 10.0.0.1 is incorrect, but other permutations
(e.g. 192.168.2.1) haven't been successful either, and the LAN facing
NIC must be 192.168.1.1 because my boxes inside the LAN are configured
to that.

I have spent a couple of days struggling with this and have reached a
point that I am no longer thinking about it clearly. I fear I am
running over the same ground again and getting nowhere. Is this basic
setup okay & if not what do I need to change?

Thanks for any help.

Best

AG
