| Theo de Raadt | New sensor driver, sdtemp(4)
For a few months I have wanted to write a driver for an upcoming
sensor device... but we have never seen any of them in the real world.
There is something exciting about writing a driver for devices before
they hit the market.
JEDEC JC-42.4 defines a temperature sensor that is wired onto a memory
SO-DIMM. This sensor chip is supposed to be wired onto the i2c bus in
parallel with the SPD-encoded serial eeprom, or, there are some
vendors who have started making single chips that contain ...

The schematics and source code even came with the Apple II and, IIRC,
the Apple II+. It was a huge foldout in the book containing (IIRC) the
monitor code and the full 6502 instruction set. You could mod the
hardware in anyway imaginable (at the time). I tried out stepper
motors, data acquisition, custom ROMs, etc. The software was the same,
I made primitive mods to many applications, but also even DOS and the
system itself.
That was one of the things I missed greatly during the ...

Ok. For the intentionally or unintentionally obtuse:
1) Both variants (and representative individuals e.g. RMS and Theo)
encourage making useful software, using the software, and making money
from the software.
2) Copyright statements (aka licenses) are just another tool. Different
tools are needed to accomplish different tasks. Use the right tool for
the right job. Get over it.
3) There is one difference between the two in one aspect of how
'freedom' is defined, especially in the ...

There's also Steve Wozniak - my hero - and a hacker after the best
traditions. He's the guy who gave away schematics to Apple I, when they
were trying to sell it, gave away source code to DOS (DOS has always been
Disk Operating System for the Apple IIs to me, MSDOS being the crappy one),
etc.

Most of what's there is probably not naturally occurring.
Just to drive home that point, see p39, pp 45-55, and p 119 of
plaintiff exhibit 3096 from Comes v Microsoft (the "Iowa case")

I wonder if there's a buffering thing going on. Under both os's, what
happens if you time it from the start of dd to the time the light stops
flashing and you could remove the stick. Perhaps linux's dd is
returning while the data is still being written.
Just a thought.

Thanks, I'll apply the cluebat appropriately. Using rsdxx indeed results in
similar results. Sorry for the noise.
I've turned on softdep for the filesystems on the stick. This enormously
sped up file creation/deletion: for example "MAKEDEV all" took 45 seconds
without soft updates, and 2 seconds with soft updates.

I presume that /dev/sd0c or sdN[a-k] was used to access the USB device
this goes thru the buffer cache which defeats the use of larger blocks under
OpenBSD. To accurately compare the I/O speeds use /dev/rsd0c, the raw device.
Please be accurate about what is being tested.
