Hi, sorry for the silence around the NetBSD 3.1 release cycle. We had become aware of a few OpenSSL vulnerabilities which we didn't want to leave unfixed in the NetBSD 3.1 release, hence we've extended the release cycle with a fourth release candidate. Binaries and ISO's for NetBSD 3.1_RC4 are available on the releng FTP mirrors: ftp://ftp.fr.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-3-1-RC4/200610111438Z/ ftp://ftp.de.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-3-1-RC4/200610111438Z/ ftp://ftp3.de.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-3-1-RC4/200610111438Z/ ftp://ftp7.jp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-3-1-RC4/200610111438Z/ (ftp.NetBSD.org itself is having some troubles lately) For those who prefer to build NetBSD 3.1_RC4 from source, the CVS tag is "netbsd-3-1-RC4", on the "netbsd-3" branch. Alternatively, you can download the source sets from one of the above URL's, under the source/ directory. Apart from the OpenSSL fixes (CVE-2006-2937, CVE-2006-2940, CVE-2006-3738 and CVE-2006-4343, a NetBSD Security Advisory is in preparation), we took advantage of this extra release candidate to add some more improvements: + msdos filesystem: write performance of large files has been improved. + toolchain: NetBSD 3.1_RC4 can be cross-built from NetBSD 4.0_BETA and -current (GCC 4.x). + daily security report for /etc/exports has been improved. + dhclient(8) exits gracefully if another instance is already running. + interrupting fsck(8) at boot-time drops you to single-user mode. + macppccd.iso should now be bootable on most Open Firmware 2.x machines. We've said this before, but we anticipate this to be the final release candidate for the NetBSD 3.1 release, so we expect to release NetBSD 3.1 within two weeks. At the same time (and independant of the 3.1 release cycle), we're planning to release NetBSD 3.0.2, a security/critical-only update for NetBSD 3.0.1. Thanks a lot for your patience, we hope you understand we are only trying to make NetBSD 3.1 even better! Geert
