I'm more an Atheros user than developer, but I would say that if the goal of becoming a nonprofit is to bring in corporate donations, that may not be so good because corporate donations usually come with strings attached, which is to say they impose conditions in order to suit their profit-making agenda, and those conditions may hurt software users.
