Hi all.

Since it seems that there currently are problems with the sf.net mailing
list archives, I subscribed all three madwifi lists to the services
provided by gmane.org. This means:

* we now have a second mailing list archive online, that will hold up at
least messages from this day on
* you can access madwifi-users and madwifi-devel via nntp, using
news.gmane.org as your newsserver
* the new archives are (at least from my point of view) more convenient
than what is currently provided by sf.net
* the new archives enjoy a nice set of features, which are described at
http://gmane.org/features.php

Interestingly, madwifi-users seem to have been subscribed to gmane.org
some time ago. Currently there are about 2900 messages archived,
reaching back to August 2003.

FAQ:

Q: What's the name of the archives?

A: The name of the groups are:
gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.cvs
gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.devel
gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.user

Q: Shouldn't that be ...madwifi.user*s*?

A: Yes, in a perfect world it would be like that. As I mentioned above,
the subscription of madwifi-users has been done by another person some
time ago, and either this person or one of the admins who actually
created the group has misspelled it here.

Changing the name now by appending the s would cause inconvenience,
since anyone who's already subscribed to the corresponding newsgroup had
to resubscribe to the new name. In addition, virtually any news readers
would regard this as being a completely independant group and download
old messages again. For this reason the name should remain as it is.

Q: How can I access these archives?

A: gmane.org provides two different ways: by web or by news (nntp).

a. Webinterface: Point your favorite browser to...
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.cvs
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.devel
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.user

b. NNTP: Point your favorite news reader to...
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.cvs
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.devel
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.user

Q: I'm looking for a special posting. How can I find it?

A: Use the search frontend at http://search.gmane.org/

Don't forget to specify which group / mailinglist you want to search in.
And, of course, only those messages can be found that are contained in
the archive. While the archive for madwifi-users reaches back to August
2003, the archives of madwifi-cvs and madwifi-devel have been created
just today.
I'll try to find a way to bring the "old" archive over to gmane.org (in
theory this is possible by importing the mails via mbox files, but in
practice this might become a problem since sf.net probably doesn't
provide access to their archives this way... but I'm not sure, so hold on.)

Q: <insert your favorite question about gmane.org here>

A: You might want to take a look at the gmane.org-faq, which can be
found at http://gmane.org/faq.php

Q: *eeek* What a strange sound! What was that?!

A: My stomach... I need to take my breakfast now. Have a nice weekend,
all! :)

Bye, Mike
