followon question:
my editor auto-indents to the '(', which is nice, but when the function-name
or the assignment its used in, takes up most of the line, the '(' 
becomes a nuisance.
A simple way to accommodate that is:

	result = some_long_function_name_foo_bar_1
			(foo2, foo3, foo4, foo5, foo6, foo7);


is this ok, or distasteful ?
