I have uploaded a hacked binary version of Kirk Johnson's
xearth program to tsx-11 and sunsite. Here is the README.linux
file.

                                Scott
                                sdh@po.cwru.edu

===================================================================

This is my modified xearth binary for Linux. The
original is by Kirk Lauritz Johnson <tuna@cag.lcs.mit.edu>
and is available (but not as nice) at:

        export.lcs.mit.edu: /pub/contrib
        cag.lcs.mit.edu:/pub/tuna (original author's site)

For all you xphoon users, this is a good color
replacement.

Xearth is a program which draws an image of the
earth in the root window, the shades it to represent the
time of day (ie where it's night, its darker). You can specify what
part of the world you want to see via latitude and longitude
(You can set it on Finland to see what Linus might be
doing and watch the sunset over the fijords with a little
imagination).

I would distribute it as a patch, but I accidentally
deleted the source while I was making the patch, so this is
the only version that will ever be. (This sounds like a
good argument for the undelete command??)

This version is "better" than the original since I've added
the following options:

-rot lat lon - will rotate the earth in the
root window every few minutes by
                        the amount specified.

-once - draw the earth once in the
                        root window, then die.

-invert - draw the earth upside down.
                        Interesting, useful -- maybe, but
I needed the flag for a smooth
                        transition when moving over the
poles, so it's also a command
                        line option.

Any comments on this Linux version to:
        Scott Heavner
        sdh@po.cwru.edu

(I compiled this with libc4.4.1 and libX11.so.3.1 (Xfree 1.2), but they
might work with lower versions).
