I had the same problem. It seems that the ATI board really does have only
512k in VGA mode. Fiddling with Xconfig will eventually get it to work.
As I recall, We started at the last clock entry and deleted lines until
it worked. The best solution however was to get the x8514a server from
one of the Linux archives and use that. It sees all of your 1meg and
will do 1024x768x256. Of course, you must have a monitor that supports
this.
