ok, you're probably all getting bored with this (and I'm probably
violating netiquette somehow by following up to myself, oh well :-)

However, I've made progress. I was able to binary-patch the xkernel
1.5 vmunix to only request 512byte blocks instead of 8K blocks, and
now it loads up sh and the init shell script. Now it fails as soon as
it tries to use /dev/console (getting "no such device", perhaps
something is being interpreted on the server when it should just be
getting passed back to the client?) This is pretty good so far,
though.

Not counting hacker time, this is probably the cheapest way to get a
19" screen on a PC :-)
