It might be worth re-building the kernel -- I had the same problem, and
it turned out to be that the kernel had support for the WD8003 driver, using
the same interrupt as my COM1 port.  Rebuilding without the ethernet
drivers fixed it all.

The hostname is set in /etc/rc on bootup.  You need to change it there.
I just changed the rc script so that it sets the system name from a file
/etc/hostname on boot.
